Horror movies, particularly slasher films, are typically about some monster or crazed madman murdering scores of people. Most of the viewers get some sort of entertainment from that fiction, but most also do not wish it were real.

All part of the anti-authority mentality that has been more and more prominent in recent decades. Tear down the heroes, glorify the “bad boys”.

Damn those authority figures! I WANT to see Batman rescue a cat from a tree, or save a busload of students from the Penguin's latest crazy antics!

I WANT MY SUPER HEROES TO BE SUPER!!!

I've mentioned before one particular writer who Roger Stern used to say absolutely could not handle superheroes properly, as he, the writer, could not conceive of anyone who was more noble than he was--which was not very.

Anti-heroes of course have a place in this kind of high-adventure fiction. We need the James Bond characters, the Dirty Harry characters, and, of course, the Wolverine characters. The ones who do the right thing for not altogether the right reasons.

But when it becomes the go-to move, when EVERYBODY becomes an anti-hero--well, I'll paraphrase THE INCREDIBLES again: When everybody is an anti-hero, nobody is.

I get a kick out of Snake Plissken. But Luke Skywalker and Superman as well.
