Quite possibly the earliest comic strip adaptation on film:
By Thomas Edison's studio, based on Winsor McCay's syndicated comic strip. McCay was the creator of "Little Nemo in Slumberland," and pioneered film animation with such cartoons as "Gertie The Dinosaur. "
Note: As most here would know, films did not have sound originally. All sounds in this video were added years later
And here is one of the very first animated films by Winsor McCay:
This one is from 1911, and features characters from McCay's most famous strip, "Little Nemo in Slumberland." In the live-action sequences, when McCay is explaining animation to his colleagues, we have the once-famous comedian John Bunny, and McCay's fellow artist George McManus among them. Note the hand colored animation, too!
Enjoy!
