I read an article recently that as of 2018 there were 2 living grandchildren of John Tyler. That's President Tyler, our TENTH President! 1841-1845.

I also remember reading somewhere the U.S. was still paying a Civil War pension to the daughter of a Veteran.

Anyone got any other living connections to history?

I have a cousin that is a daughter of a Union Civil War veteran, though she was not receiving a pension. I met her purely by chance as I was wandering a cemetery in the mountains of Arkansas where my grandparents and other ancestors are buried. She and her daughter, who is about my age, were also walking among their ancestors. We got to talking and established our connection. I corresponded with her daughter for a couple of years. About a year after I met her, she was honored in the Harrison (Arkansas) Daily Times.

Cool story Byron!
Your cousin, as a surviving child, should be getting $73.13 a month by law. I would apply for it just to have that connection on record.

I'm not sure of the how the pension entitlements work. She is a child from the veteran's second marriage, which occurred post-war and late in his life. As I think back on it now, I think she stated her mother had received a pension. She'd been recognized by the Sons of Union Veterans, and they honored her father in 2013. I'm certain she'd know if she was eligible.

*******************************

No. Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith was the last of the Lincoln line.  He died in 1985.  My mother knew him personally and actually attended his funeral.  Beckwith was an attorney in Chicago and the attorney my mother worked with at the time was friends with Beckwith.

I just realized, that gives me 5 degrees of separation from Abraham Lincoln.  Wow.
