Say Republicans

I think it’s time for them to stop calling themselves that.

Self centred, evil, inhuman, greedy, vile, nasty and idiotic are better names for them now.

The survey needed an asterisk.

“With malice toward none, with charity for all.”

Snowflake.

Abe no doubt loses points for the whole prosperity-offered-to-everyone-in-a-unified-country notion.

They also thought W was a better president than Lincoln. After all, Abe stomped all over states' rights and lacked the strength of character to implement a torture regime.

I watched the movie "Trumbo" today and it strikes me that the same unthinking fanaticism that gave rise to the HUAC is the same kind of myopic idiocy driving politicians to ignore facts and support this clown. How can so many people ignore or be ignorant to the final destination if the GOP maintains its course?

Technically, it was the ABUSE of state’s rights that Lincoln wanted to control. He was opposed to the (soon to be) Confederate states spreading slavery westward. They claimed they were entitled to do so under “state’s right”, missing the important point that those rights did not extend beyond their borders.

I've had MANY people around here tell me this and it is BECAUSE Lincoln freed the slaves that they believe this.

At best, Trump could be considered a better President than a Lincoln (e.g. the bloated, garish, 1975 Lincoln Continental), but not the Lincoln.

These so-called Republicans have buried themselves so deeply into an Archie Bunker-style echo chamber that were he alive today, Honest Abe would be labeled a Socialist by the Republican faithful, without hesitation, because he wanted to maintain the Union (a.k.a "Big Government").

What about Reagan, Koroush? After all, he wanted *horror of horrors* the wealthy to pay their fair share of taxes!

The Republican party is poised to make intimidation and extortion the law of the land, and then it will be official, the U.S. is fully in the hands of provably racist con artists and crooks. Hey, it must be the lord's will as he struck down John McCain the same as earlier he struck down Ted Kennedy to handicap the rest of Obama's tenure... no arguing with that logic... once you are 'saved' it's all good right? Oh, never mind that sin no more jazz, that's just fine print...

Brian, are we talking about Ronald Reagan, or another Reagan? Because Ronald Reagan's famous "Reaganomics" did no such thing. It was entirely based on giving more to the wealthy, including the nonsense "Trickle Down" theory:

 QUOTE:
Reaganomics ...called for widespread tax cuts, decreased social spending, increased military spending, and the deregulation of domestic markets.

In terms of making the wealthy "pay their fair share":

 QUOTE:
The top marginal tax rate on individual income was slashed to 28% from 70%, and the corporate tax rate was reduced from 48% to 34%.

So no, he didn't do anything like that.

The difference was that Reagan was presiding over a United States that still had economic and political dominance in the world, and he left office before many of his bone-headed decisions eventually bore fruit. E.g. his rampant protectionist policies that propped up the US auto industry eventually lead to that same industry becoming so uncompetitive that it collapsed in the '90s.

Classic Republican President - looked and sounded great on TV, but had no idea how to govern beyond standard Republican dogma (reduce taxes, reduce "Big Government", increase military spending, act tough, etc.).
