Okay hello there as a new member here just curious how did JB came up with the yellow and brown Wolverine that we know and love. As JB made the Wolverine costume more iconic with that costume and how did Chris Claremont felt about it the first time it was created.

I wish there was a cool story to tell, but it was nothing more than me grumbling that wolverines are not blue and yellow. Finally, editorial told me to design something else.

The blue and yellow outfit was based on the Michigan Wolverines' colors.... NO idea why they did that. Made no sense then, makes no sense now.

At least you weren't stuck using the "Fang" outfit.
I did prefer the brown/tan costume. Seemed much more on character than the loud yellow and blue.

I actually like the Fang costume. Long sleeves didn't make sense for him, but it would've been cool sleeveless, too.

1976. Dave handed me his model sheet of the Fang outfit. “This is Wolverine’s new costume,” he said. “It’s a bear to draw.”I walked across the hall to EiC Archie Goodwin’s office and asked “Am I really stuck with this?” “Nah,” said Archie. “Change it back as soon as they get home.”

“Wolverines are not blue and yellow.”
The University of Michigan would debate that (but quietly since we got our asses kicked by the Buckeyes yet again).
I have read that the Maize and Blue was the inspiration for Romita’s original design.

When I was a kid and that whole Cockrum run started, I convinced myself that Wolverine's costume made sense because it was kinda similar to the colors of the first X-Men uniforms. Now what made the most sense to me was when Logan was just wearing that heavy jacket, jeans and the cowboy hat. He never seemed like the kind of guy who would wear a costume.

I think I just liked those sort of claw motif markings on the yellow & blue one, I did miss those for some reason. But I remember really liking it when the X-Men wore more regular clothing and not uniforms... like everyone on Muir island, or Jean inside #131 to approach Kitty, and Wolv on the cover of #141.
Few X-Men needed 'costumes' to stand out visually. Imagine if circa #56 when Neal Adams started they just mostly stopped wearing them? There was a decent science fiction premise and the Sentinels and Sauron are wonderfully visual. Havok would have had his head piece and effect when using his power, Polaris had green hair, Cyc his visor, Jean when powered up was like a psychedelic poster, Beast would want to get his shoes off. I guess Iceman of all of them could pass for normal when not using his power, but I've always though it absolutely daft that Angel could strap his wings down so much (like Iron Man carrying his armor in a slim little briefcase). I might've kept the X belt buckles if there was some reason for it, but as much as I thought Storm's and Phoenix's costumes were pretty cool, neither really had a need for them, and the flame bird effect was dramatic any time. This would've required a good artist like Adams or JB to not give them silly clothing, but real what people wear in the street at the time gear, and a lot of artists can't seem to do that. I think Paul Smith was also particularly good with the non-costume clothing. So my ideal Wolverine outfit would be something like that #141 cover.
