Jason F: "This makes me wonder how many other projects are just sitting in a
drawer somewhere, unpublished for whatever reason."

****

A bit obvious I know, but just in case some people are not aware ...

JB's unpublished X-Men series ELSEWHEN is currently being featured for free
in the ByrneRobotics Fan Fiction Forum:

Fan Fic
Forum

It's a daily treat of one penciled/lettered page a weekday, and we're already up
to Issue #8!!

Reading the comments of the BWS article, I see some readers were surprised
that the material was posted in its entirety as they were not aware that BWS
had released it himself some time ago. You'd think something like this would
get more attention on the comic book news websites, but like ELSEWHEN
there has been little mention.

My sense is that the comic book news sites want to stay in the good graces of
the publishers and don't want to cover something the companies have not
published. It certainly seems newsworthy that BWS and JB would give away
their work for free!

Did I miss why the project wasn't finished? Seems like it was mostly done...?

Wow...First time I heard of this and I'm a big fan of BWS. i saved all the pages and will print them asap to make a dummy comic book version of it for me. Lettered and everything...that's perfect...I did notice a Blaastar appearance somwhere in there...
I'm constantly puzzled at how some real great comic creators have these almost finished works that remain shelved...
And what happened to that 3 parter Iron Man story by Adi Granov that only had 2 issues published ?

I'm going to cut and paste JB's annual FF title and logo to make it more real...

My guess would be some sort of shift in the editorial department. Might have been a project that was officially approved, contracts were signed, and the editor in charge either left the project or Marvel's publishing plans changed before the project was completed. This could have been worked off-and-on for years, too. Any number of reasons that a large portion of it was completed but didn't get to the publication stage.

It looks fun, but I've never been the biggest Barry Smith artist out there. Of course, it's not horrible; just not to my preference.

That being said... there is no way, shape, or form that that ISN'T the Fantastic Four, and that's good enough for me!

I've got a few of these selfmade dummy books by now...
A few of JB's ( Finders of..., the hard to find Judge Dredd story, You Go Ghouls !) I might do a Last Galactus Story collection one day but I miss a few chapters...These Epic Magazine are hard to find and expensive and I have zero interest in the other stories most of the times... Another one of BWS : the Weapon X story from Marvel Presents before I realised the tpb in fact existed. From the same books I made a full Shanna by Paul Gulacy and one I made for real with colour copies bounded professionaly from my favourite European comic creator François Bourgeon. I like making custom made comic books. i wish I had binding skills and equipment though.

Years and years ago, I got a book from the library and learned how to do (amateur) book binding.  If I recall correctly, no special tools required (but get some strong glue and cardboard).  I made a hardcover single edition of a complete run of reprints of the Wein/Wrightson SWAMP THING.  I don't know what happened to it in the years since, but I remember being pretty happy with it.  Didn't do much beyond that though--the new age of trade paperbacks was upon us!

Phillipe's post jarred my memory. Marvel used that artwork as the cover of Fantastic Four #50 (Volume 3?), the "Nuff Said" issue. I remember getting that issue and being disappointed that BWS didn't do any of the interior art.
