When I was stationed in Germany in the early 1980's, my wife and I made it a point to visit Dachau.  We were visiting Munich during Oktoberfest (late Sept, early Oct), and the camp is about 10 miles up the road from where we were staying.

That visit has stayed with me ever since then - from the "Arbeit Macht Frei" words welded into the gate, through the one barracks building left standing to the ovens ... all contrasted against the beautiful German countryside. I had a hard time reconciling the honest, friendly, hardworking German people I had grown to know while I was there - with the remnants of the pure unadulterated evil I was seeing along with the photographs and other records on display.

I was reminded about one of my college professors in college in the 70s - Dr. Gordon Prange - who was an American exchange student in Germany in the early 1930s - and his observations about the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party.  And of how HE had the same problems I did 50 years later - how to reconcile the people he knew with the evil done by them or in their name.

An experience I'll never forget.

Try they might, and try they do. But WE WILL NEVER FORGET.

We will never be slaves again. We will never be overlooked or downtrodden again. We know war but we desire peace.

As I have noted many times, the Holocaust is proof there will never be peace on Earth. After all, this was regular White people killing regular White people.

I visited some areas of Auschwitz 15 years ago. Didn't have the time to visit the whole area. You could still feel the heavy history it holds.

There's a 10 minute play competition coming up in Edmonton (where I live).  I've written a play that takes place in Auschwitz, based on a true incident.

Where things can lead when too many listen to a perpetually outraged 'strong' man who blames entire groups of people and promises greatness. :^(

Today I have thoughts for my great grand parents, Barukh and Tauba Szmidt and their two youngest children, Bella and Leon Szmidt, who died in Auschwitz in 1942.

Thanks Eric.

I realize I should have said "... who were murdered..." instead of "who died"...

I was reading yesterday that a lot of young people have
no idea about the holocaust, it used to be taught in
British schools, it should always be taught.
