JB (and anyone else if you don't  know),

Do you know how many covers you did for Marvel on books that weren't 'yours'?

I was flicking through the latest Power Man and Iron Fist Epic collection today and saw a couple of covers that I wasn't aware of (#106-107) to go with the one I was (#105).

I'd love a book of all your Marvel covers that aren't in 'your own' collections and was wondering how viable it would be.

But I’d also be interested to know.

Mike's Amazing World of Comics lists 785 covers by JB, which seems low to me. Nonetheless, now all I need to do is go through that list and eliminate the ones that JB didn't write, draw, or ink the interiors of.

(Deep breath) This may take some time... :-)

Marvel should do a JB covers collection!

I didn't know they number was that high, so maybe this is an omnibus in and of
itself!

I'll start...
1. Spectacular Spider-Man #17

2. Human Fly #9

3. Star Wars #13

4. Jungle Action #23

5. Iron Man #109

6. Amazing Spider-Man Annual #12

7. Spider-Woman #26

8. Justice Machine (1981) #1

Okay, someone can continue the count from there. :^D

don't forget to use this site's checklist as well as https://www.comics.org/

edited to add - just did a query on Grand Comics Database - 992 covers (US) are credited to penciller byrne - i'll do another query to get story written by or pencilled by byrne and find some way to eliminated the 2nd list from the 1st list to get:

covers pencilled by byrne but contents NOT written by or penciled by byrne

Working just off the checklist from Mike's Amazing World, these are the issues I've been able to find up to January of 1987. These include covers that are inked by JB as well as those penciled or painted by him. I'll keep going tomorrow, but for now...

Amazing Adventures 6, 9
Amazing Heroes 1, 22, 76
Amazing Spider-Man 249, 268
Atari Force Special 1
Avengers 260
Batman 401
Captain America 238, 239, 290, 291, 308, 313, 314
Daredevil 201, 203, 223
Dazzler 36, 37
Deadman 4
Devil Dinosaur 9
Doctor Strange Classics 1, 2, 3, 4
G.I. Joe 20, 35, 51
Human Fly 9
Incredible Hulk and Wolverine 1
Incredible Hulk Annual 14
Iron Man 109, 197
John Carter 18
Jungle Action 23
Justice Machine 1
Machine Man 14
Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves 54
Marvel Age 2, 14, 30, 37
Marvel Saga 3
Marvel Team-Up 70, 129, 133
Marvel Team-Up Annual 7
Marvel Two-In-One 98
Official Doom Patrol Index 1, 2
Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe v. 1 15
Official Marvel Index to ASM 1
Official Marvel Index to FF 1
Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man 17, 43, 101, 102
Power Man and Iron Fist 106, 107, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 119
Rawhide Kid 1
Rom 56, 57
Secret Wars II 1
Spider-Woman 26
Star Wars 13
Super-Villain Team-Up 14
Thing 36
Vigilante 35
Web of Spider-Man 3, 4, 5, 6

At this point, we're at eighty covers by my count.

I didn't count the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe issues which included work by JB, so number 15 from the first series is the only one to make the list. Also, your opinion may differ as to whether Marvel's in-house circular and indices that include work from him should be on the list.

Mike's doesn't list fanzines so issues of Comics Reader, Comics Interview, and Comics Journal et al are not included. Let the corrections, criticisms, and differences of opinion begin...!

Taking a look at Leigh's original post, he's only asking about JB's Marvel covers, so if we subtract the comics above that aren't Marvel, we come to 69 covers prior to February 1987 done by JB for comics which do not include new interior work by him.

What does everyone think? Should I continue with this exercise finding work from all of the companies JB has worked for, or just stick to the Marvel work from the original question?

Captain America #314's cover was probably drawn by Paul Neary not JB.
