NFL owners agreed on a host of issues for the new CBA on Thursday, not the least of which is a change to the playoffs as well as extending the season by a week.

Playoffs - As early as this upcoming season, the playoff field would be extended to 14 teams (up from 12) with only the #1 seed from each of the two conferences getting a bye the first week of the playoffs.

Regular season - Would be implemented in 1-3 years, a 17 week season as opposed to to the current 16 weeks.  Discussions of an additional bye for each team, equalling two per season, are still ongoing.

My thoughts: I have little concern over the playoff scenario.  Although I'm a huge fan of fewer teams fighting over the chance to get to the playoffs, I'm fine with two additional games for the first two weeks of the playoffs.  I do, however, have an issue with 17 weeks and a second bye.  This pushes the NFL season well into February.  I think that's a bad thing.  The NFL season is about as perfect as it gets in pro sports.  I know it's my sport so I'm biased, but the other three majors run way, way, WAY too long.  As much as I enjoy football (and it's a lot) I'm a big proponent of shorter seasons that leave the fan wanting more rather than filling weeks just to get more ad dollars.

A 17 week schedule is probably as inevitable as an NFL team eventually being located in London (ugh) but it all just feels wrong to me.

Thoughts?

"...the other three majors run way, way, WAY too long."

...

I've been saying this for a long time, now I may be saying about Football.
Baseball needs to dial it back to the 154 game schedule again, as now the regular season starts in snowy March and the World Series ends practically in frigid November.
Hockey and Basketball both allow their playoff seasons to run way too long.

Yeah, I feel the way the NFL is currently set up is pretty damn perfect. Not a fan of 2 bye weeks. More playoffs would be cool, but the season moves at such a good pace already I don't really want to see it messed with.

What's the point of adding a week to the schedule if they're just going
to give them another week off anyway?

If they're adding more wildcards, then they should have the wildcards play each other right off the bat, so we don't have the potential of a wildcard vs. wildcard conference championship game.

Besides adding another bye week, how about also dropping pre-season from 4 games to 3 and starting the season a week earlier?

I'm ok with the 17th game and the added bye week, just as long as the reduce the number of pre-season games to 3.

The extra playoff teams?  No.  It's idiotic.

How do they decide which teams get the extra home game in a 17
week season?

I think it rotates between conferences.  First NFC, then AFC.  Wash, rinse, repeat.

Why not just make it 18? Knock out 2 pre-season games nobody but
desperate bubble players want.

17 is good, because no more .500 teams....unless they're 8-8-1
