 QUOTE:
Cut me a little slack at first, Michael. Like I’ve
said, it took longer than usual to “find” this book.

No problem! Even the best writers/artists don't always have
a firm grip right away. Plus, when I look up retrospective
comments from online morons and see topics for discussions
like this -- JOHN BYRNE'S WONDER WOMAN RUN - WHY DO PEOPLE
HATE THIS RUN? -- I'm even more primed to be patient!
Jeez... "hate"?! To be that ferocious!? Nuts.

Ted, you're very fortunate. One of these days I hope finally I get to meet John Byrne, have him autograph a few books, maybe get a sketch.

ITEM: Mr. Byrne's writing and style have a certain flavor to them which I find delectable. Not to say he repeats himself - but that I recognize the layouts, the pacing, the switches, etc. I remember reading "Amazon" from the Amalgam series and thinking it so perfect that it was a little difficult to remind myself that it wasn't part of a series, retelling Ororo's origin - it was magic and one of the two best Amalgam books.

ITEM: I loved the appearance of the JSA. It seemed pretty obvious that Mr. Byrne wanted, at the least, to do a mini-series with the JSA - but had he done an entire series, I would have been delighted beyond words.* And Invaders/JSA was a dream beyond dreaming - which, sadly, DC and Marvel proved.

ITEM: There's something that bugs me about several posts - one of which was earlier in this topic. Someone posited that Mr. Byrne was the best creator on this book after George Perez.

I love George Perez' work. I love John Byrne's work. But I can't compare them - there's no basis. Who draws a better Superman or Captain America? Damn me if I know! Who wrote a better Wonder Woman book? I can't tell; I can't even find a way to compare.

So neither is better. They are both master comic creators. They both provide endless entertainment; I go back and read both when I get the opportunity. But maybe we could stop qualifying who's superior; there's no way to judge that I know of.

Now, there's may be one you LIKE better, and that's the nature of humanity. But if someone can tell me which is better, I'd like to know how.

That's rhetorical, not an invitation.

* That's literal. I gaped and ooh'ed and aah'ed and ohh'ed when I first read Batman/Captain America. And every time since, for that matter.

For those who are reading John Byrne's Wonder Woman, don't forget the annuals!

Wonder Woman Annual #5 (1996) was part of the far-future "Legends of the Dead Earth" theme that ran through all the annuals that year, and featured a brand-new Wonder Woman who assumes the role on an ancient generation starship. This was written by Byrne, and the beautiful artwork was by Dave Cockrum & Norm Breyfogle.

Wonder Woman Annual #6 (1997) fell under another annual theme, this time "Pulp Heroes." This genuinely eerie, unnerving story was written & penciled by John Byrne, and inked by Tom Palmer.

Damn, I have not recollection of either of those annuals.

The editor and I had to fight to get Dave, after I suggested him for the job. The Powers That Were wanted nothing to do with him.

…..

I was fortunate enough to meet Dave Cockrum on several occasions over the years at conventions and store signings.  After the Wonder Woman annual came out I complimented him on it, and he told me that you had been the one who had requested for him to pencil it.  Thanks for fighting for him to get the job. It was nice to see the two of you collaborating.  It was a very different and enjoyable story.

I would have loved to meet Cockrum!

Guess you're the lucky one now, Ben?

Ted, I guess we are both lucky!

In any case, for those who are not familiar with these two annuals, here are the covers. I definitely recommend them both.

I think the run on this series is excellent - it was strong right from the start,
and just got better and better.

I had revisited the stories over the years as I usually read it when I would revisit
JB's FOURTH WORLD. But I hadn't read the annual penciled by Dave Cockrum
until the hardback came out recently - it was really great to see how well it
held up. This was right up Cockrum's alley.

Why had Dave Cockrum fallen so out of favour with TPTB by the mid-90's?
