In another thread, Dan Dare is mentioned, and I believe that's one of Mr. Byrne's favorite strips.
I'm mostly unfamiliar with British comic books and strips - my biggest exposure is a tpb of Captain Britain stories and some Marvelman books I got in American reprints.
What I saw of Dan Dare really appealed to me - very clean art, great dialogue, really interesting sci-fi gadgets and gizmos. So could someone suggest other such stuff I might like?
I'm especially interested in super hero books, but I'm also a big fan of Adam Strange-ish stories - episodic heroic fiction, clean art, and - rude as this sounds - somewhat American accessible topics and dialogue. I don't get cockney rhyming cant, for example, even though I know it's a part of British dialogue and language.
He don't ask much, do he?
Anyhow, I'm looking into getting one of the Dan Dare collections. What else might you chaps recommend, if you please?
P.S. - I thoughtlessly noted this applying to just British strips. Not at all! I'm interested in any good books. My only restriction is that they need to be in English. I'm a typical American - "Why cain't them funny books all be in good ol' fashioned American? It's like they got a whole differ'nt language or somethin'..."

There are multiple iterations of DAN DARE, so be careful. His best period is late 50s, early 60s. There are several good—tho not cheap—reprints. (If you want to mimic my experience, start with “Safari in Space”.)I wish I could recommend HEROS THE SPARTAN, also from EAGLE, but the recent collection was an abomination. (The strip ran as the center spread in a tabloid format comic, but the publishers in charge of the reprint set it up with art and lettering disappearing into the center crease on every page!)

Eric, if you are ok with digital, the Dan Dare collections are on sale @
the moment.
The Trigon Empire was a strip I used to love as a child. By the time I
got to it, it was in a magazine called Look & Learn.
Hotspur was interesting & I liked the design of the costume if a
character called Cobra.
& then there were things like Kelly’s Eye, about a boy with a medallion.
Loads from 2000AD. My perennial favourite was Nemesis. That
eventually tied into strips like Robusters & the A.B.C. Warriors

I might be wrong, but the Yoko Tsuno books having a lot of science behind some (as well as an adventure, mystery and often aliens) might be like a Dan Dare for girls. They have 14 volumes from Cinebooks of England but it's by French creator Roger Leloup starting from the early '70s.
I never quite knew where to try and start with Dan Dare so I might check out a late '50s collection sometime, thanks!

Good point Rebecca. My elder sister was a big fan of Yoko Tsuno and I read these stories thanks to her.

I would definitely check out any Wagner/Bolland Dredd stories you can get your hands on and Rogue Trooper -- also from 2000AD -- is worth a look (early art was by Dave Gibbons).

Rebellion have just published the first of four volumes reprinting The Trigan Empire. You can see the first few instalments in the Amazon link to get a taste of the series.
Unfortunately UK comics haven't been reprinted to the same extent as US ones but Rebellion are now starting to build quite a range of material with their Treasury of British Comics.

Philippe: Not at all British only, and I'm sorry I stated it that way. I'll modify that at some point.
My only qualifier is that it's got to be in English. I know tiny bits of other languages - a little Spanish from high school, a touch of French and German - but I don't want to work that hard to read a book.

One of the very few non-American comics I've really ever
enjoyed was GON. Beautiful artwork. All silent
storytelling. Cute, fun stories.

The Adventures of Luther Arkwright by Brian Talbot was
really good. It originally came out in what I would
describe as 'exploding editions' which would just fall
apart as you read them - but they were treasury sized and
looked incredible.
They them came out in comic form, but the text was
practically unreadable as it was so small. Dark Horse then
brought a set out that could be read.
Multi-dimensional invasion where Luther can cross between
dimensions and leads the earth against the invasion.

Ok Éric. I always recommend French based Brazilian writer/artist LEO who has a huge sci-fi long running series of space exploration. I’m sure it was translated to English. Aldebaran/Antares/Betelgeuse...On a crazier side the recently deceased Juan Giménez and the Caste of Metabarons...Also Schuiten (Belgian) and the Obscure Cities series...on the more cerebral side.
