Matt: Nathan, that Spider-Man Comic Book Club of Ithaca is a cropped version of a parody mock "Spidey's Super Stories" cover JB did which also had the Punisher blowing away the Easy Reader (Morgan Freeman's character).

Hi Matt!
They look similar, but they are different. The only place I’ve seen that Spider-Man drawing is on that Ithaca pamphlet... and from what I’ve been told, the drawing was specifically drawn for the pamphlet.
All I could find was this grainy pic of the Spidey parody — but you can see they are different drawings...

Thanks, Nathan, for the info about that Spider-Man drawing.

Nathan, William, can we assume that you both have every John Byrne comic book in your collection or are you not completionists and just like the obscure stuff?

LOL! I mentioned this before on the board inthe past, but I received "The Art of John Byrne" as Christmas present from my parents when I was probably around 11 or 12 years old. I would not have gotten the book had my mother knew about the nudity. Well, I didn't know about it either until I took it with me when I rode along with my mom as she went to some shop. I was waiting on her inside the car when I broke open the book and saw that "Critical Error" story. When she came back to the car, I naturally stopped looking at the book and hoped that she would have no reason to ask to see it. Heh.

I finally moved to a place with a comic book store nearby, and I saw the Art of John Byrne book on the shelf soon after. What a find - my favorite writer and artist! I wanted to buy it desperately, but I saw the nudity and put it back - my brother was busted for a Playboy, and it was not a good scene that I wanted to repeat.
It took me years to finally get a copy! But the scar runs deep, and I still hide it in a drawer when my mom visits.
(I'm just kidding)
(I actually hide it in the cabinet)

I collect all things featuring JB art. The collection has gotten pretty big... so these days I usually only buy things that feature a “unique” image. For example: if Marvel releases a tpb with new cover art, I’ll buy it... if Marvel releases a tpb that doesn’t feature any new material (and I already own all the reprinted issues), I probably won’t buy it.
There’s exceptions to these “rules”, of course! :)

I bought The Art Of John Byrne on one of my earliest trips to a specialist shop also... the owner would let me buy underground comix so that book was nothing in comparison. JB's brains coming out and Kitty with boobs were the only bits of shock I remember. :^D

Back in the mid-80s I was working on having a complete John Byrne comic book collection but got away from comics around 1986. Too bad that I did not continue. Still have a lot of the older stuff though but nothing obscure.

Neil, pretty much the same for me as with Nathan. I like the hunting of JBs previous work (so much of it!) and all of his current art. I’ve also been binding all of his printed comics.

Yeah, I remember you talking about binding years ago. Not too sure I would do that myself but it does make sense. My big regret is that in one of my comic book purges decades ago, I sold all my John Byrne Fantastic Four comics. So stupid of me.
