Chicago has some if the strictest guns laws on the books,
still the south side rioted and destroyed the
area with over 40 people shot by firearms. How
did they get the guns?”

Sigh...

This old yarn again?  Illinois is neighbored by states that have very lax gun laws.  Find it tough getting a piece in Illinois?  Hop on over to Indiana where you can get a handgun with a Happy Meal.

Swear to God I wish I had a dollar for every time somebody used Chicago crime in some reaction to race related topics.  It’s clearly page one in “the playbook”.  And frankly its fucking tired.

As for “destroying your own community in the process” Listen to this sister and get a grip on things....

I personally believe in the 2nd Amendment somewhat, but I do NOT believe in the NRA or some reasoning for gun violence.

The violent video games bullshit. Video games are more prevelent in Japan and South Korea, but they have far less shootings than in the U.S., due to stricter gun laws.

I believe in common sense, which the NRA lacks....or just doesn't care about.

Sales at gun shows should have to follow the same background checks and waiting period as if you bought it anywhere else.

The NRA wanted to make silencers legal due to some shooters having hearing problems. That's what ear protectors are for. If silencers are ever made legal, I give it less than a week before some psycho goes on a mass shooting spree and kills more people than he would have without a silencer because its next to impossible to track their location.

Laws some places have that require everyone to own or carry a gun should be illegal. But taking a gun safety course to even own a gun should be mandatory, and if you fail the test it should be months before you can try again.

The `they want to take our guns away!' garbage the NRA sprouts about Democrats is just fearmongering. What they want is stricter laws including background checks. True, criminals will still manage to get guns, but stricter background checks would keep them out of the hands of some people whose hands they should never get in in the first place, or at least make it harder for them to get them. But the NRA and Republicans think people owning guns is more important than people not being killed by guns.

There's a video going around Twiiter, allegedly of a brawl that led to the CHAZ shootings. It just looks like a bunch of college age guys going at it. None of them look like criminals (if there is such a "look"). Yet it ended with a murder.

Defund POLITICIANS WHO MAKE THE LAWS.  A lot of this is residual effects of the "War on drugs" nonsense which has profiled the black community especially. Cops wouldn't be profiling people if they weren't instructed to. Eric Garner - No selling of loose cigarettes law in NYC. "Zero tolerance" as stated by De Blasio who blazes up when he gets free time. Who the hell thinks of a law like that? What kind of country do we live in if two consenting adults can't do a transaction as inconsequential as that. Just my 2 cents.

That’s social engineering by law, which is the very definition of a slippery slope.

Jobless Minneapolis cops would find employment in private security firms, patrolling neighborhoods who can afford their services. Poorer neighborhoods would have to rely on themselves, forming watches. Even poorer residents would turn to gang protection. Everybody would be armed to the teeth.

Cops are good because they are a necessary evil. But in the current puritanical hysteria, all evil must be expunged.

And replaced with a department that may have a law enforcement division with licensed peace officers. They aren't getting rid of law enforcement, just rethinking about how it will be structured.

It is too bad they used the term “defund” to describe what the intention is. It just confuses matters.

Joe Z. - I have to disagree with you. Police are not a necessary evil. BAD cops are a necessary evil. Expunging this evil is what "defunding" is about. And Neil L. is right; I still hate the use of that word. It's not nearly correct necessarily, and certainly not the primary issue. A well founded force of law-enforcement that we can absolutely rely on is well worth it to me.

Government gives authority to one stranger over another. There are inherent risks in that, because there's no guaranteed way of determining a person's character, or whether they would stay "good" under chronic pressure. But it's necessary, otherwise everybody would be responsible for interpreting and enforcing law. We had that once, it was called the Wild West. Minneapolis might be going "Back to the Future 3".

If you want to fix a very broken car, you have to throw money at it. Get better mechanics. Do complete overhauls.  You don't "defund" the process.

Defunding the police actually means punishing them. Making them do more with less staff, training, equipment and pay. You end up with police who are even more corrupt and abusive.

The thing about putting social workers on the front lines sounds nice. But you end up with situations where the perpetrators keep on running away, and harming the "peace officers" who try to get them to stay. The real cops show up just to collect bodies.
