At least this is a self-contained volume. I put off
reading the recent MoS Volume One because Two was on its
way in pretty short order. Now I can't read One *or*
Two because Three has now been pre-ordered and is on its
way this summer. Tis a strange sickness.

Whew! Grabbed the only copy from my LCS :)
Now I can join the club of happy Generations owners!
Still think that ish 1 cover dot pattern is a bit "random" as they kids say these days - especially as it never recurs on any of the issues from G1 to G3. Nevertheless - I`ve loved JB`s work on that cover from when I first saw it back in '99. And I remember being delighted when I learned the concept of the series back then, thinking happily "trust John Byrne to think up such a fascinating idea for a series!" Entertaining and very nice to look at too, as it turned out!
Thanks again for Generations, JB! I hope you got to achieve your vision for the series, without too much editorial interference.

I'd suggest that collections like this have at least a couple of "lives" -- first as a binge reading product right after purchase. You get the book, you're excited about the book, you read the whole thing cover to cover and enjoy the immersive experience. Then, over time, it becomes more of a reference material....go back and read that section, or cross-reference something you read in the collected work against something you're reading in another book.
Lastly, there's the nostalgic re-read...which is another binge, I suppose. I like to read the works of the masters once a year or so.

That's probably a good way to put it. I guess I treat
them like any other book, and I'm not one to have
multiple books on the go at once - I start one, I
finish it, and on to the next. And these collections
are coming so close together that I get one in hand,
see the next is not so far away, and think "well, I
might as well wait...". Now if they were years apart
(ala A Song of Ice and Fire), I would absolutely read
one (still start to finish, of course), then patiently
wait for the next.

Does this promotional art JB did for the first series show up anywhere in the omnibus?
IMHO, they could've used it as the cover for this collection.

That piece was done, incidentally, before I had the series fully worked out in my mind. (Typical DC. “We want to promote this before you’ve even started it”)Effectively, it became my “plot” for the first series, as I had to work out a lot of details for this drawing! (Just this morning I came upon a “review” of GENERATIONS that was mostly positive, tho the writer had to take the obligatory Kewl Fanboy shot at Big Bad Byrne, and then go on to say he didn’t like the use of the Ultra-Humanite in this story. Why? Because he wasn’t familiar with the character!)
