JB, given the above, I'm genuinely interested to know your thoughts on Data from Star Trek. What do (did at the time) you think of the character, the concept, the way he was portrayed (not in an actor way, but in a story sense), etc.

••

I barely watched NEXT GEN, so I really have no fix on Data.

...my story had Artoo turning out to be beyond repair and simply junked. Threepio then goes on a quest to a robot junkyard planet to find parts that will allow Artoo to be fixed.

Reminds me of this fun C3P0 pin up (questing for R2D2 himself) from circa 1980 (EMPIRE STRIKES BACK days.) I assume this was unrelated and simply an EMPIRE tie in as the blurb suggests?

I think there are some tropes that persist because people who employ them think they are actually innovating.

Bringing empathy to robots seems like one that seduces many writers in that way.

(thread drift -- I love the drawing above of that Stormtrooper's back. I just had a thought about that cylinder on their belts - what are they? They look cool and that's enough, but in context? Supplies? Camping gear? They seem inconvenient for sitting - but, maybe that's the point! Maybe they are to enforce strict standing discipline on Stormtroopers!)

Looking again at that STAR WARS drawing, I find myself wondering what I used for reference. It could only have been the 3" action figures, I would guess, based on the vintage.

I still have the 3" Threepio, plus a foot tall version from the same time. And a life-sized one bought about ten years ago. I have them together to one side of my TV, and call them my three C-POs.

Geez, Mr. Byrne.   If only you understood the potential of your own creations....

You could really make something of yourself if you just go the extra mile.

Droid uprising.......

I guess they don’t have the Three Laws in that galaxy far, far away.

Vader's interrogation droid wouldn't work otherwise. You
can question how much intelligence it needs, but, then,
you can also question its need to hover.

They're eevn surprised to find loyalty in a droid, I
guess their workaround/backfit is the restraining bolt.

Vader’s interrogation droid...

•••

That was a droid?

I didn’t see it as anything other than a nasty remote control device.

As to hovering, if the technology is available, that seems like a practical solution for a large, cumbersome, presumably heavy machine that has to navigate the multiple levels of the Death Star, or even just the holding cells.
