Found THIS rather lengthy discourse on the robot receptionist I created during my time on FANTASTIC FOUR. Dizzying. And more than a little depressing.

Most depressing, this:

“It’s nice to see the development of Roberta as a character. Starting out as little more than an animatronic answering machine with big glasses, she slowly evolved into a permanent fixture in the FF's lives. Seeing her grow from being an inconsequential appliance in the 80s to slowly gaining a sense of self during the DeFalco "mechanized human" days, culminating in her current status quo as a fully independent Robot American...she has come a long way. And still, she remains so delightfully courteous...”

Why do all robots have to “evolve”? I WANTED Roberta to be an “animatronic answering machine”. That, at least, made her something DIFFERENT.

Ah, well. No cliche is to be avoided, it seems!

This is after my time, just learning about her now, in
this thread -- but the original is just such a perfect
distillation of JB's approach to comicbooks, the subtlety
he mentioned as a hallmark of his work in another thread.
Roberta is but a small character (if "she" can be called
that), and that's the point! These little tiny touches
are such a pleasure. That Reed Richards constructed her
is no surprise, but how delightful that he'd name her
through a pun?! What a nice subtle way to express that
within the super-brain of Mr. Fantastic there's a lively
sense of whimsy at work too?

But then... to evolve her into... something far beyond
what she was originally intended to be... just BECAUSE
you can...? Oh well!

Better watch it, JB. Or else you'll be seen as anti-Robotic-Life. ;-)

Just tried calling the number, but it is disconnected.  Oh Roberta, how we miss you.

Reed's never-ending parade of gadgets is part of the fun with the FF.  Why continue to go back to the well and linger on what's already been done, when you've been handed license to play in that kind of sandbox?

COMING SOON: ROBERTA, 4 issue miniseries, where the FF's robot receptionist breaks free and goes on a date with Machine Man, before fighting Ultron... and falling in love!

Will the damsel droid find happiness away from the reception desk? Must every freaking robot story involve "robot evolution" and meeting every OTHER robot in the Marvel Universe?

Find out maybe never!

Mechanical liberation now! Free the calculators! They might want to take up watercolor painting instead of spending all their time processing equations for humans.

But the original Herbie did die a noble self-sacrificing death. Awww, poor l'il bot. sniff sniff :^(

••

Archie Goodwin asked me if I would be interested in writing and drawing a fill-in issue of STAR WARS. I was, and I used the opportunity to address a point that bothered me in the first movie, namely the fuss made over the damaged Artoo after the attack on the Death Star. Seeing the way Droids were treated in the rest of the movie--basically talking furniture--it seemed odd to me that there would be any concern.

So my story had Artoo turning out to be beyond repair and simply junked. Threepio then goes on a quest to a robot junkyard planet to find parts that will allow Artoo to be fixed.

Time and tide did not permit me to do my story, but it does reflect my general attitude toward robots. They are amazing machines (the fictional one), but machines is all they are. We anthropomorphize our cars, so not surprising that we do the same with something that actually LOOKS like a human.

But isn't. Sorry, Rogie!

I have a space opera partially written and there's a robot mechanic that is trying to unionize the mechanicals on the station. It's not making any real headway but it's persistent.

JB, given the above, I'm genuinely interested to know your thoughts on Data from Star Trek.  What do (did at the time) you think of the character, the concept, the way he was portrayed (not in an actor way, but in a story sense), etc.
