Mark, were you interested in seeing which artist received the most mentions or hoping to discover another artist's Strange work to read? If the former, the fact that some people have disregarded your request to select one artist may skew those results. If the latter, have you picked him?

Wallace - I'm not sure I've seen anything that I didn't think Alan Davis drew well.  He's sort of like Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez in that regard.

I was interested simply in seeing what names popped up in this context. In
my heart, I wanted someone to point me toward a name I hadn't seen, who
would become my favorite. That has not happened.

But the conversation is interesting. I don't find that Gene Colan or Frank
Brunner or even Michael Golden evoke Steve Ditko very strongly to me. I
wondered if that would bother everyone when "push comes to shove" and
only one name could be named as "the best after Ditko."

I don't see that result. But everyone seems to see art differently (i.e. so
many people besides me are so wrong! ;-P. )

Mike Mignola for me. Wish he'd done more than just the Triumph and Torment graphic novel, which is one of my favorite Marvel comics of the last 30 years. That Roger Stern is such a fantastic writer. The run he did with Paul Smith (and a few other artists) is quite excellent as well.

Wallace, those Alan Davis Dr. Strange illustrations are glorious. I've been rereading his Nail and Another Nail and Clandestine recently. He's such an amazing artist (and a pretty dang good writer too). Outside of John Byrne there isn't another artist that draws what in my head is the perfect version of just about every Marvel AND DC character. JB is my favorite comic book artist (and one of my favorite writers as well) but Alan Davis is a close second. He's one of those artists like JB or Kevin Maguire that I will buy anything they draw even if I don't like the writer or character, just because I love their art so much.

Sam Kieth drew some Marvel Comics Presents covers and trading cards of Dr
Strange I for the most part loved his work on The Maxx

I treasure that one '70s Dr. Fate by Walt Simonson... I wonder, did he ever draw Doctor Strange? I'm thinking in passing Strange might've appeared in a Thor but I'm not sure.

Agreed, Robert! Alan Davis shares that mutant ability with JB. Also like JB, Davis art can elevate a less talented writer's script. (The downside of this is that both AD and JB have fooled me into thinking I liked a writer's work... until I saw him paired with other artists.)

I have read (and enjoyed) those stories as well, Shane. I really, really, really wish Alan Davis owned CLANDESTINE. It's such a good book, and I'd love to see it at IDW. Oh, and Alan Davis is definitely right there behind JB when it comes to my favorite comic book artist/writer.
