There is a crazy contrarian layer in fandom, where the inhabitants not only use the wrong terms and ideas, but become absolutely adamant about that usage. "Bubbles" instead of balloons is a typical example. So is the Great Blue/Black Debate. Some have it wrong, and are determined to die on that hill.

Alex Ross released a few more of his recent cover work.  I think this pretty much looks like Nightcrawler as he should be.

Nightcrawler manipulates light. It's one of his 387 powers. The effect is that his face looks as if he's holding a flashlight under his chin.

Does that look like he's holding a flashlight under his chin?

(As I have said many times. Ross' technique blows my mind, but for the past several decades he has seemed determined to suck all the grandeur out of the characters. Neal Adams drew super-realistic interpretations, but he understood when the fantasy elements had to come to the fore.)

By the way, I assumed Garfield Logan, Beastboy's civilian name, was inspired by Wolverine, but it looks like Beastboy is about 10 years older.

So I wonder if Wolverines's nickname, Logan, is the one inspired by the other.

Mt Logan is the tallest in Canada, but I was surprised to learn that was not Chris’ inspiration.

Alex Ross is a huge talent. His skills are so extraordinary that they in fact make superheroes look ordinary. That's why he should never be allowed to draw them.

I will respectfully disagree with you Philippe, there's room for a wide range of artists.

Ross may be a little too into "realism" for some people's tastes, but there are probably just as many who enjoy it.

In X-Men/Teen Titans, Beast Boy and Wolverine are trying to pick up a trail. Beast Boy said he heard from Kitty that Wolverine's name was Logan too and wondered if they were related. Wolverine responded that "Kitty talks too flamin' much."

I think it was Alan Davis who coined the term "casting" to describe the assignment of talent to characters. Sometimes the casting is apt, sometimes less so.

As noted, Ross is a supreme talent, but as the years have gone by his style has become less and less suited to the superhero genre.

There's something about Mr. Ross' hyper-realistic
renderings that almost bring to mind what the "Legends of
the Super Heroes" TV special looked like back in 1979.

I think Ross’ work has also suffered over the years from no longer being new. His control with value, color and form is fantastic  And when his work was being released everyone was stunned. But it is tough to find anyone interested in comics and comic art that has never seen an Alex Ross cover or artwork. With current comic art pushing more and more realism Ross’ art has lost its uniqueness as well. Remember when Joe Jusko or Boris were new?
