A History

Very depressing—and not because those figures are the SLIGHTEST Logan I’ve ever seen.

Interesting to learn my “brown” version had the longest run, at least as of seven years ago.

Even Wolverine could not avoid the straps and movie.

Grew up with JB's version and to this day it remains my absolute favorite!

If the "Classic Yellow" had never been changed, I wouldn't
have had a problem with it. But it's quite clear that JB's
"Brown" version is the most like the character's animal
namesake and thus the most fitting. To my eye it was then,
and remains now, a change for the better. Oh well!

"Noseless," eh? Lotta fans of that one...?

Google it, Michael. It seems to represent the absolute nadir of respect for the character.

I remember my first thought upon seeing the brown version: "That's more like it!" Not that there was anything wrong with the original, but the new color scheme simply suited the character better.

I also remember when Whedon and Cassaday brought back the X-costumes after the Age of Black Leather, and how that felt like a glass of ice water served in the middle of the desert. Costumes on heroes in comic books, who'd a' thunk it?

There might be two or three! It was so unpopular, they just gave up on that storyline at a certain point and Wolverine looked normal again without any attempt at an explanation. I will say one positive thing about the noseless Wolverine, it got rid of the "sexy" Wolverine that had developed under Silvestri and Jim Lee, at least until Hugh Jackman was cast in the X-MEN movie and he became sexy again.

Sadly, I found the lack of a nose was only the second dumbest thing about Wolverine at the time. The dumbest thing was his bone claws. Not just the fact that he had bone claws, but they were thick, jagged, and thorny. Where did that go when he retracted his claws?

Oh... man.

Lookit, in my time as a reader, there were some really bad
moves (e.g., six-armed Spider-Man), but... COME ON!

Crazy thing about the brown costume: NOBODY seems to understand the shape of the dark part in front. (Even I cheat a bit, depending on the angle of the shot.) Since I let go, the configuration has been all over the map.

And don’t even get me started on the back, which is even simpler!

Growing up with the character, the JB brown costume was the one
being used. I thought the original was just the coolest. Probably not
because the design was better but because it came first and was out of
use more than anything.*

After seeing all the different artists tackle the brown, it just made more
sense for the character and I grew to actually not even like the yellow
and blue at all. Still don’t.

* At the risk of having a glass of Dr Pepper thrown at me, the Fang
costume was my actually my favorite growing up. While I didn’t think
Wolverine should have sleeves, I thought it would look badass without
them. Still do.

Two things wrong with the Fang costume: as Dave himself said, “it’s a bear/bitch to draw.”*

Second, Wolverine has an interesting face, under his mask, and having that face exposed all the time would make it... ordinary. Notice how WILD his face has become over the years, as artists who insisted on drawing him unmasked struggled to keep the interest up.

—————

* Someone once asked me if I thought that Dave, POed over being squeezed off the book, used his last issue to deliberately make things tougher for his successor. I can only say....... I don’t know.
