Occasionally there are jobs where it seems appropriate to draw as much as
possible in the style of another artist. You did covers for some Doctor Strange
baxter-paper reprints in the 80's that looked like lost Ditko art.

Do you find that sort of assignment fun?

And, another question: do you remember using reference images to get those
Strange covers right (or, in other words, can you turn on that much Ditko
influence at will)?

Second question first: all done with reference.

First question: I have always been impressed by the way Wally Wood could duplicate the styles of other artists. It seemed like something to which I should aspire myself.

I enjoyed your Kirby-style art on the Gormmu in FANTAST FOUR #271 and the Sub-Mariner framing pages in FANTSTIC FOUR SPECIAL EDITION #1.

Ron Frenz is especially good at this, he did a passable Ditko style in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and a Kirby style in THOR.  Both without totally aping them like Rick Buckler did when he drew the Fantastic Four.  I've also seen Frenz do commissions in these styles as well as Don Heck.

Probably fun to do if you're an established artist, but I would think it would get old fast if that all the fans (or your employer) want.

The first JB job that popped into my head on this topic:

Could you talk about how you ended up doing this particular annual, JB? I'm assuming you're a fan of the animated series.

Those are two great examples, Robert! I immediately thought of the
Sub-Mariner pages, but had forgotten all about that Gommu story!

Jason, those panels remind me of JB’s YOU GO, GHOUL.

In a similar vein, if you're willing to name names, JB -
are there any instances that you know of where someone
was deliberately aping your style that you think were
particularly good?

I think I became most aware of artists doing this after seeing Barry Smith's Kirbyesque run on DD.

Found it hard to believe that it was the same artist (now as Barry Windsor Smith) who provided the art for Conan's Red Nails or those occasional X-Men fill-ins.

That animated-style Joker is spot-on. I was a huge fan of those comics when they were coming out. Not everyone got it this right.

••

Correct.

Incidentally, first time I was nominated for an Eisner Award was for this job. Basically, "John, we like your stuff as long as you don't write it, and draw in someone else's style." sheesh

Mr. Byrne, off the top of my head, I've seen you draw in the styles of Jack Kirby, Bruce Timm, Joe Kubert*, Tom Batiuk, Steve Ditko, Curt Swan, etc. And you have hit the bullseye every time.

So if you wonder if you have that duplication talent - I am here first in line to say that you have got it, sir!

*I drool over that Enemy Ace Christmas story every single time I read it. EVERY. TIME. With no offense, if I didn't know you were involved in it, I'd never know it. I am filled with awe and respect for it.

That comes mostly from the INKS, Eric, tho I do flatter myself that I captured Joe’s distinctive layouts.
