"... I didn’t understand how a person could be said to have discovered a place
already populated by others,..."
...
Same with me, the response would be the addendum " discovered by civilized man".

What will the District of Columbia become? Or the nation of Columbia?

DC could become Capitol City. Very Golden Age!I doubt the people of Columbia worry about stuff like this!

Columbia University, on the other hand...
And yes, there have been some editorials and guest columns in the Washington Post addressing what we might want to name the District if Columbus is to be removed. Capitol City would be a great suggestion! It could become America's first city-state if statehood for DC is realized. (It sometimes surprises me that New York City hasn't made a stronger push for independence to become Empire State or similar.)

Christopher F. "Does this mean that Columbus, Ohio is going to be next on the hitlist?"
As a born and bred lifelong Clevelander... meh. We could follow another example and rename it "Ohio State Capital", serving double duty.
I mean, let's be serious. What else is Columbus best known for?

I was being sarcastic. I find this trend of renaming things because a school, park, etc. was named after someone who said something racist 200 years ago a little much.
Most people probably don't even realize who the city is named after or care for that matter.
Where do we draw the line with this kind of thing? Do we give everything generic names like "State Capital" or just start numbering things?
Fix the history books? Yes. Do better at naming things in the future? Absolutely. Change existing things to satisfy the Twitter outrage mob? No thanks.

By "Twitter outrage mob" you mean "people who don't like racism" correct?
And no, I don't think we rename Washington. Though a slave owner, as a Founding Father he helped create the system that allowed us to eventually end slavery and do a lot more justice to groups the Founding Fathers left out.
Christopher Columbus and Jefferson Davis did nothing to help this country. It's time to stop pretending they did.

Columbus didn't discover squat, so I've got no problems at all with anything celebrating him going bye-bye.

The country spells it's name COLOMBIA. Not sure what, if any, difference that makes re: Columbus but I've been graciously corrected on this point by two lady friends who hail from there.

I read somewhere that a Columbus didn’t really think the Earth was smaller than everyone else. He had previously tried to convince patrons to pay for an expedition to find new land in the hope there would be something between Europe and Asia, but no one would fund him. So he came up with fake math to show the earth was smaller and started trying to get funding to sail to India thinking that was an easier pitch. The supposition is that the later pitch was something he knew was bogus and just an attempt to get funding for his original idea under false pretenses.
As for Washington, DC, the bill that has already passed the House would rename DC as “Washington, Douglass Commonwealth.” It removes a Columbus in favor of Frederick Douglass. It has zero chance of passing the Senate though, as it also makes it a state with full representation.
