Doesn't look so intriguing to me, and doubly not when using Bruce Wayne. Claremont seems clever; so he should start a new hero with this. Leave the existing characters the fuck alone. If it's great, the idea will rise to the top of the barrel like cream. If it's not, it'll rise to the top of the barrel like... em, something else.

And the article indicates IIRC that Claremont never wrote for DC save JLA's "The Tenth Circle." I remember the series Sovereign Seven, even if I didn't read it. So... a slip.

The article states that Claremont has never written a Batman book, not that he has never written for DC.

I do like that he never comes across as jaded, instead he always seems to be full of both new ideas and enthusiasm for his new ideas. Of course, those ideas are not always going to be as good as he thinks they are. Like this one.

I never liked the idea of giving the Waynes' killer an identity. For me, what killed them was not Joe Chill nor a conspiracy. Those ideas can potentially have a resolution for Bruce. His drive and motivations are then tempered. I think, rather than an individual or some grand story, Bruce's parents were killed by "Crime". Faceless Crime. And that's what keeps him up at night.

I prefer the murders being unsolved over Joe Chill being the killer. But I'll take Chill over the man who eventually becomes the Joker being the murderer any time.

Batman/Bruce unmasking before Joe Chill is one of the GREAT scenes in the mythology, especially coupled with what follows immediately. But there is no debating Bruce catching up to the man who killed his parents takes a bit of the edge off. Partly restored by Batman not being able to bring Chill to justice, but still, all things considered a tale probably best left untold.

A little googling brought me to this:

In the 1980 miniseries The Untold Legend of the Batman, Alfred Pennyworth reminisces that Joe Chill is the son of one Alice Chilton, a one-time caretaker of young Bruce Wayne.

ARRRGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Why does everything have to be touching.....?
