Not that it really matters because McConnell's statement is just dissembling bullshit, but he doesn't even have his facts correct.  Anthony Kennedy (nominated by Ronald Reagan) was confirmed to the Supreme Court by a Democratically-controlled Senate in February 1988, which I'm pretty sure was an election year.  So I guess his statement really should say "Since the 1980s, no Senate has confirmed an opposite-party president's Supreme Court nominee in a presidential election year."

Earlier tonight Trump was touting Ted Cruz as his pick for the supreme court to a cheering crowd.

I guess it makes twisted sense... who would liberals most hate to see and their base would thus most want.

I wish I was joking. By not stepping aside when asked a few years earlier when she was just entering her 80s and had serious health issues even then, R B-G may've almost entirely erased her career accomplishments. Some religious folks on the far right will be saying this was the providential hand of the(ir) Lord. People who might not have voted for Trump may now to protect a 6-3 supreme court in their favor.

The only saving grace so far might be that Republican Murkowski said she will not vote on a replacement judge ahead of an election. So that's one. Collins helped Kavanaugh in so don't know about her.

There are 4 Republican senators battling to win their seats.  They're very much in danger of losing.  All of them are behind in the polls by at least 7 points.  IF they want any chance of keeping them, the only way they do that is not allow a vote for a new SC justice until after January 21st.

Unless you're imagining a strong likelihood that the nominee will be Left leaning, would it not suit these conservatives better to put a new equally conservative Judge into SCOTUS before the November election? Wouldn't that please their constituents?

We may be on the verge of the fastest SCOTUS confirmation in history!

This could go either way psychologically.

Put in place early, & the Republicans might think they have won & not
need to vote Trump

Hold off on the vote & they those Republicans that don’t like Trump
May hold their noses & vote for him to ensure a Republican gets it.

Donald Trump reacts to Ruth Bader Ginsburg's death. The inexplicable Elton John soundtrack is a particularly surreal touch.

ITEM: In the real world, there have been occasional super heroes, and Madame Ginsberg was one. Powers and abilities far beyond those of ordinary mortals. She fought long and hard, to literally her dying breath, for the United States of America. The situation now grows VERY dark... but we have to keep fighting in her name.

ITEM: It saddens me that we use this topic to criticize Mitch McConnell. Not that he doesn't deserve it in copious amounts... but maybe not in a memorial to a great woman.

I am creating a new topic, "How about that Mitch McConnell?" and I hope we could address our thoughts of him there. This doesn't seem a fitting tribute to Justice GInsberg.

RBG was quoting abolitionist Sarah Grimké. CNN has an interesting article about her and the quote.

  • Trump was heckled by a crowd at the Supreme Court chanting, “Vote him out!” as he & Melania paid their respects at the casket of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Fitting.
