"I came close to making Shaman a member of the Cree nation, but I realized the potential for confusion in a Marvel comic. " ---------------------------- As a young lad in Edmonton the Kree and Cree confused me.

There been a couple of changes regarding the First nations in the Calgary area. The Sarcee nation is now the Tsuut'ina (pronounced 'su-tina') nation. 'Sarcee' was apparently the Blackfoot name for their tribe and the Canadian government latched onto it, the Tsuut'ina weren't fond of of the name.
The Blackfoot nation are now the Siksika nation which means 'Blackfoot' in their native tongue.

I hadn't known anything at all about the Sarcee prior to AF. Gets me to wondering... were the Great Beasts based on Native American myth? They're a terrific invention and have the feel of a mythological origin.

The Great Beasts were entirely my invention. I applied an old rule of mine: if you make it up, you can’t be wrong!

I remember spending some time researching JB's Northern Gods and Beasts - convinced he had taken them from "real" mythology!

I think Shaman is probably my favourite Alphan. Unique power set and great origin story. The Great Beasts were an excellent invention and added a distinctive flavour to the mix -- I had no idea whether they were from actual mythology or not when I originally read the comics, but they were pretty convincing.

My favorite Shaman story is ALPHA FLIGHT #24 - "Final Conflict." I was not collecting comic books when this was released - I first read it by spotting this in a Boston comic book shop I visited while in college:
This had issues #20-24 shoved into a comic bag, with no room for any cardboard backing. It was the first Alpha Flight story I read since the early issues I bought, and I was blown away. I would re-read these often, and they sat on my bookshelf in this bag the whole time. I would even think of this as the "Hit the North!" story. I doubt the comic shop rep who made this label would think it would survive much past the initial sale, much less until now.
Years later and at the urging of the brilliant Mike O'Brien, I would collect the whole series. It's all fantastic, but this part of the run has a lot of meaning for me.

...one follow up...
I just opened this package, and at some point I stuffed AF #19 in as well ("Turn Again, Turn Again, Time in Thy Flight"). That was one of the first I tracked down later on as I wanted to know how Talisman came into the picture!

Cool story. You know a comic book is good when you want to go back and re-read the issues.
