I was musing on the previous Byrnonson combos, and while he stayed completely faithful on this Lilandra-Phoenix page, he brought his own line on the others, particularly on X-FACTOR ANNUAL#4 (I don't remember - was that job breakdowns or full pencils?).

I generally don't like when other inkers bring in their own style to the point that it reduces your own, but perhaps hypocritically I do like it when those inkers happen to be artists whose styles I really like to begin with. Walt was one such example. Kyle Baker was another.

Re: a Simonsyrne combo (ok, I'll stop) , that's a fair question. He's a tough one to do justice. I felt that Bob Wiacek was the only inker outside of himself to pull it off. Doesn't mean that I wouldn't like to see Byrne-style inks over him, though!

JB: Inking Walt's work would present a couple of key questions before I could even start. Should I try to ink like Walt? Or should I just go ahead and ink like me?

Ink it like you. I don't doubt you could do solid "Walt Simonson inks" but a piece of art that brings you together (IMHO) is better when it reflects both of you.

Just my $.02.

I'd say there's little point in you trying to ink like Walt. I think Andrew's comment about reflecting both at once is on the money -- I think you want the inker to bring a certain stylistic polish ( of course with due concern to the substance of the pencils).

On the other hand, it's neat to see JB's art in different styles (I'm thinking of that BATMAN ADVENTURES annual as an example).

Well, there IS this (note the signature, too):

That wasn’t really an attempt to draw like Walt. The signature was a joke on his having done the previous covers.

Huh! Egg on my face, then. I thought that the background characters on the left were pretty Simonson-eque, plus I was thinking about the way he likes to incorporate circles into his work with your rings of fire. When I first saw the cover from a distance, I really thought that it was Walt!

Annoying thing about that cover, and the issue behind it, was that in his first appearance Mister Miracle's costume colors were different, and I asked that that color scheme be used in this flashback.

"Sure!" was the response from editorial.

Then. . . .

That cover would have made Jack Kirby smile!  It is just Mister Miracle at his best...and I for myself like it a lot! (Along with the colors, something that I can not say about many comics of that time).

("Mister Miracle's costume colors were different"... oh, now that  is
something that ruins my appreciation of the colors....).

For some reason I had 1st December in my head as the date that Elsewhen would be returning. Only now realising it's the 7th.
