Please no! Let's not turn the X-men into a soap opera (again)!

Hey, one of my favorite superhero comic book runs was a soap opera! Smilin' Stan Lee and Jazzy John Romita, Sr. produced some absolute gems during their time together on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

Soap Opera used to be the defining difference for Marvel. Depth of characterization and complicated "home life" subplots, AS WELL as the superheroics.

I recently read how another notable comic book creator not only purposely writes so that readers are not required to turn the page to see the "payoff," but advises other writers to do the same. I am not knocking that creator or his approach because he has found success doing things his way. I just wonder what the advantage of intentionally not ending pages on cliffhangers might be.

••

Well, it would be easier.

Ok. I see your point --- but does that mean Scott has to start sleeping around left and right again?

:)

I miss those days. Sad that on the whole I would much rather re-read a beloved old comic (even an at-the-time 'unpopular' title) than read most of what's trawled out these days.

Love the expression of Kitty's face on the latest page!

I now realize that Beaker from The Muppets was actually a D'Bari sleeper agent. Apparently, he took on the position as assistant to Dr. Bunsen Honeydew in an effort to learn the secrets of Earth's greatest scientific mind next to Reed Richards.

Just want to say "Thanks" to JB for this unexpected but thoroughly enjoyable revisit to my favourite X-Men era.  I'm obviously late to the party (what's new) but that meant I had almost 16 issues of Byrne awesomeness to savour.  I haven't felt this elated about a comic since I was reading your Fantastic Four run.
And a huge "Thank You!" for rendering Cyclops as the real hero he is rather than someone I simply don't recognise.
And I'm loving Kitty again.
This is simply heaven.

THANK YOU.

For some reason today's surprise was really, really effective. There I was reading that panel with Cyclops and thinking how this was all quite civilised as they swapped information and then BAM! The double whammy of Sprite's shocked face and then the intruding guns of the extra bad guys. Well played.
