I'm going to go ahead and say again that JB is one of a very few comic book artists with the uncanny ability to draw any character and always make him/her look right.

I absolutely agree, Wallace. There are so many characters for whom JB is the definitive artist for me: Captain America, Galactus, the Thing, the X-Men, you name it. His Thor is right up there with Walter's, and his Iron Man compares nicely with JR Jr.'s. Growing up, any work by JB or George Perez was a must-buy.

In my early days on THE CHAMPIONS I was called upon to draw a character known as Rampage. Actually, it was just his suit, being animated from elsewhere. It was not a great design, but I did what I could with it and Roger Stern (by then an assistant editor at Marvel) was so impressed he declared my mutant power to be the ability to make any character look good. In fact, that became kind of a mantra: Byrne even made the Rampage suit look good!

I also agree.

And no one—no one—ever draws Sasquatch right, other than JB.

^ agreed- his Sasquatch is THE model for the character and everyone else draws him badly.

I think what most artists miss is the whimsy in Sasquatch. They forget (if they even know) that in designing him I was heavily influenced by those Scandinavian troll dolls.

Phil Jiminez came pretty darn close, but I can't think of anyone else.

I've seen two Alan Davis drawings of Sasquatch. One (showing him alongside other members of Alpha Flight) looks great, but the other (a head shot of him smiling) captures his personality a bit better.

Coincidentally, I'd say that Alan Davis also has JB's mutant power, in that his versions of characters always look correct to me.

Davis not only draws "on model" but also infuses his characters with, for lack of a better word, the quintessence of their personality in the same way JB does. It is an extremely rare quality.

Did not know that about the troll dolls! That's really cool. And yes, I think "whimsy" captures what most of these others miss about Sasquatch. He's one of the few man-monsters out there who *likes* his alter ego.

Yes. AD is on the short list of artists who for whom that is true.

There are also characters that I don't believe JB has drawn all that often, at least outside of commissions, but that I find to be spot on. One example is Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell). I love JB's version — very different from Jim Starlin's, whose version is classic — but a perfect rendering, nonetheless. I would have loved to see more of JB's take on the character.
