Plonker used to be big in the eighties.

Gordon Bennett was big in the seventies.

When either are used now, it's as much to evoke a sense of nostalgia as to poke fun at someone.

Gordon Bennett was still going strong in the 80s when I was at school. Not so much by the latter part of the decade though.

Maybe it's more an English thing. I never really heard anyone here in Scotland use it. 

And the only time I hear it now is when Graeme Garden says it on I'm Sorry, I Haven't A Clue.
