Okay pal, you got me. That could be ascribed to the trauma of transforming, and might be a wish instead of reality - but you showed me the pages! Thanks.

Yeah, it's probably something that would have gone unsaid otherwise, but I think it does inform his reaction to Sue calling him a coward.

Just a tangent, but I'll never get over the stunning monstrosity that was the debut version of the Thing.

@Jason Czeskleba:

Thanks for the info re Roy Thomas, and....

@JB

Thanks for the correction - it's odd that Stan's reference to "the stars" - nicely vague - became "the moon".

Also, it would be weird for Ben to hold a simmering grudge against Sue.
Feminists might say "why not? Bring it on". But it would still be weird.
+++++++
Why would it be "weird" for Ben to hold a grudge against Sue but not Reed?
I'm not sure what feminism has to do with this either? I could guess but I would
hope I'm mistaken.

Ben doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who would blame Sue for his own bad decision.

I agree which is why I don't like stories where he spends a lot of time blaming
Reed either(other than the first 75 issues or so when it was relatively new).

Ben chose to fly the rocket. He knows that, deep down, and he wouldn't blame Sue for it. (And FWIW, has anyone shown that happening since that story?)

As for his anger toward Reed, I always felt it stemmed from having such enormous faith in his friend that he believed Reed could do anything he wanted to do... and if he hadn't found a way to change Ben back, it's because maybe he didn't want to for some reason.

Was Reed just not that smart before he got his powers (and therefore did not take proper precautions) or was the cosmic storm completely random and unexpected?

(If the latter, what about the Red Ghost and his apes?)

There have been a few different explanations over the years. Reed's engineering was entirely satisfactory for *ordinary* conditions, which the cosmic ray storm was not.

Short version: most cases of the origin present this as an extremely rare event.

Red Ghost was trying to duplicate the FF's trip, so he was probably searching for identical circumstances-- something Reed wasn't doing when they set off on the spur of the moment.

The latest retcon is that the cosmic rays were an attack by the leader of the planet the FF were trying to reach.
