One of the things that has crept into comics is “creators” who don’t like the characters to be BETTER than them. Stan, Jack and Steve gave us characters who had feet of clay, sure, but later writers extended that all the way up to the neck.

Reed’s intelligence being a mutation satisfies the needs of writers who don’t like the idea that some could be that smart all on his own.

One MIGHT note a discrepancy in that Ben's powers were always on and the others' weren't. It might have been a bit more consistent if Johnny had to concentrate to turn OFF his flame, Sue had to focus to be visible

There was a hint of that in the first issue, but it didn't go any further than that.

Per the FF #1 synopsis, Stan and Jack's original conception was that Sue would become invisible permanently, and would have to wear some sort of mask for her face to be seen.  She would remove the mask and disrobe when needing to use her power and not be seen. As he's typing it up Stan is already having second thoughts about the idea though, and says that he and Jack should discuss it further.  Obviously they did, and changed the concept.

Jason C. - well let's be honest. Sue is GORGEOUS; why wouldn't Jack want to draw her? Especially if he pencilled her in the nude and then inked her uniform or clothes on her.

Yeah, I stole that joke from Fred Hembeck, but what the heck. Nobody read that mag anyhow. :)

JB,

If I'm remembering correctly, you once said that Doom is slightly smarter than Reed, but his ego gets in the way and proves his undoing?

That's interesting - I thought of Reed as being Doom's intellectual superior with regards to science and maths, but Doom's knowledge being broader, including magic and sorcery.
