CNN

Is that even possible? Doesn’t an individual need to possess at least a shred of decency and self awareness before “humiliation” can occur?

I have seen no sign of either in Trump.

I honestly think the only way to humiliate him would be to expose his real income and assets. He doesn't care about anything else.

It's purely a fantasy to think Trump can be humiliated. And not just one from the Left. The Wall Street Journal's Editorial Board today said that, instead of going through this impeachment trial where Trump is almost sure to escape conviction, "The greater rebuke would come from letting him suffer in isolation, without power and with the stigma of a bipartisan House impeachment vote."

Nonsense. Trump is merely laying low until the trial is over. He's not suffering. He's not isolated. He feels no stigma. And he's certainly not without power.

Astonishing, isn't it, that this creature can have been on display in front of us for decades, yet so many people seem blind to his most obvious failings.

His biggest flaw is that he simply isn't that bright. That's a conclusion I cannot believe everyone hasn't come to. I think humility would require a level of understanding, and self-awareness that he simply isn't capable of.

Trump as a phenomenon is astonishing.

Partisanship is, of course, same-old story. Just days before Nixon resigned, a Gallup poll showed that 7 out of 10 Republican voters did not think he should resign.

But Nixon tried his damnedest to cover up, whereas Trump essentially pulls down his pants, bends over, spreads, and invites everybody to gaze and, really, worship. Yes, this is a crude, vulgar image but absolutely appropriate to the man.

An unfathomable phenomenon.

Trump is the ultimate "ugly American". Everything the rest of the world sees as wrong with this country, he embodies. And proudly. Without the least indication that he senses anything at all wrong in greed, infidelity, talk of incest, corrupt business dealings and, finally, calling for the destruction of our democracy by violence.

I guess I stopped caring about Trump's reaction, period, awhile ago. I just want him and those with him gone, disconnected, as would seem to be a natural eventual consequence, just sooner rather than later would result in the least damage.

I don't give a sh*t what comes out of his or his kids' or Giuliani's mouths, never mind hour after hour of shrill 'discussion' of same, and if everyone was on that page there'd be no problem. He's an example of whining affluenza entitlement is about all; exposing weaknesses we keep allowing for such noncontributing germs to develop. Joke businessman. Joke president.

Pathetic to see people worrying about his being provoked or his so-called lashing out, like they're all a wife and kids in a dysfunctional family with an unhinged 'stong man' father. A political party of grown men cowering lest they be called a name by the bigger and fatter kid!

THAT was it, Mr. Byrne! President Murder is the ultimate Ugly American, entirely! And that son of a bitch is what the world saw for four years, and he built up that image of King of America over all that time.

I hate to sound arrogant, but it's possible that part of the hatred the world holds for us is because we provided no leadership for the past four years - just mindless blather and unbridled contempt.

••

The world has been hating us a lot longer than four years.

The most puzzling thing to me about the Trump phenomenon is how he is embraced by groups of Americans despite being the antithesis of what they value.  He shows utter contempt for Christianity and lives a profligate life filled with porn stars and sexual assaults, and yet the Conservative Christians love him.  He was born wealthy and has had everything handed to him in life, yet he's embraced by the working class.  He dodged the draft and has expressed outright contempt for those who serve, yet a substantial amount of military and their families support him.  Generally a demagogue has to at least make some pretense of being "one of us" to garner support from a group, but Trump does the exact opposite and yet it works for him.  The degree of loyalty he receives from his followers is puzzling and frightening.

He presents as Pro-Life and so the Christians love him.
