Howard Chaykin's American Flag. It would be interesting to see how much more dystopian a world he can imagine than the one we have today.

AMERICAN FLAGG!! assumed that the USSR would survive in the 21st century. (So did NEXUS by Mike Baron and Steve Rude -- far beyond the 21st century, as I recall.) So I can understand why Chaykin would be reluctant to go there again -- it's no longer a possible-future story, it's an alternate-reality story, which I assume is something he never intended.
It's a pretty classic series, that much I agree with.
