I’ve thought the idea that having Mr. fantastic stretch his neck looks well, weird. After reading through one of IDW’s Artist Edition of the Fantastic Four it looks like all the way back to issue 33 Marvel did too.
I’m only speculating. What do you think?

If you think about it, Reed would always stretch his body because Reed would always bring tools, in this case his hands.

With so many of these behind the scenes glimpses and seeing rejected covers, etc., it really seems that Stan Lee (as editor here and I'm assuming the one who called for the change) really had all the right instincts for what worked and what didn't.

Stan’s contribution should never be underestimated.

Bill Mantlo (I think) told a story of visiting Kirby’s studio and watching him finish a page. When he was done he set it aside saying “No, it’s a good page, but Lee would never accept it.”

Stan’s vision was clearly defined.
