i only started buying by collecting pop bottles and milk jugs and cashing them in at the grocery store - i never got an allowance.

•••PCFlashes me back to grade school and one apartment complex we lived in. Across the street was what looked like a large industrial park, but what was actually a sprawling hospital.* I used to cut thru the lot on the way to school.

In the middle was a small store that sold, among other things, licorice. It was that for which I’d cash in the pop bottles.

My first 47 comics from Dec. 1978 to Aug. 1979. I had a few when I was younger but my memories of those have been lost to time. I do remember the smaller-sized Dennis the Menace and Disney books were a hoot. My younger brother rekindled my interest in comics when he brought home Amazing Spider-Man 186.

Most of these were bought from the same spinner rack in the Marsh Supermarket my mom shopped at every Friday afternoon. The Uncanny X-Men Dave Cockrum covers at the time did nothing for me at all. It wasn’t until [shaking my head with embarrassment] the Dazzler cover that I bought my first X-Men. Once I learned about buying back issues I went out and sought earlier issues of my favorite mutants. 

This was a grand time to get into comics.

I'd be hard-pressed to pick out which '70s Scamp or other Gold Key funny animal (including Baby Snoots), Harvey humor comics (mainly Sad Sack), Archie, Dennis The Menace or Gold Key adventure type comics I personally picked out and bought in the '70s. I can't even say for sure which Wheelie & The Chopper Bunch it was I'd gotten. There was a digest that reprinted four Carl Barks adventures though, and I did get Supergirl in Adventure Comics #410... it took me decades to figure that issue number out! Also Shazam! #2 & 6, Adventure #421, Plop! #1, 4 & 5. It would've been my brother who got Fantastic Four #151, and I didn't care for it. There were also many Mad, Cracked and Crazy magazines. I got a Brave & Bold #136 in the late '70s with Green Arrow and The Metal Men which I didn't pick; my Dad got it for me in a quick corner shop stop. I got the first two collections of Gold Key Star Trek comics under the subtitle 'Enterprise Logs' volume 1 & 2 from 'Golden press'. There were also the big DC tabloids that reprinted old stuff, we had the Detective #27, Batman #1, and Wonder Woman #1 ones, and a Superman with a variety of reprints inside. These were higher priced and most likely my brother's choice too, as was Superman #245, a 100pager with lots of different old reprints, but I looked at them often. Then Battlestar Galactica #4 and Star Wars #24 led to my buying Marvel comics a lot more regularly.

Some comics, often minus a cover, came trading with other kids. I got Super-Team Family #1 & 6, Teen Titans #50 & 53, Batman #300, Shazam #32 & 34 that way, and I also ended up with the Warlord First Issue Special debut and Avengers #189 around when #192 was the current issue. I bought a John Carter Warlord Annual #3 on a ferry trip, there was a little newsstand on the boat, and the #2 & 3 Spider-Man paperbacks that reprinted the old Lee & Ditko comics in order in color. Somewhere in there was a well thumbed Howard the Duck treasury tabloid thing.

Okay, I'm boring even myself! It is interesting though to read about much earlier comics buying activities. I did used to return bottles for the deposit to buy comics, and when my mother sent me to the corner store I got 5 cents or even ten cents just for that. By the early '80s I had a paper route income.

The ones I can remember and confirm through Google. A scattering of comics from 1976 and 77. I was no more than 5 years old.

Well, among the first 45, there were surely a bunch of ARCHIE and RICHIE RICH, but I soon "graduated" to DC and Marvel.  Here's quite a few that probably rounded out the first 45.


Edited: Oops!  Obviously the AQUAMAN and WARLORD issues must have been bought a couple of price changes later.  For Aquaman, I meant to post one of his earlier ADVENTURE COMICS covers (though I probably bought a couple of the Spectre issues first).  I'll let WARLORD stand as it is an early memory of comics buying--I was sick and my Dad bought me the comics that week and he chose WARLORD, which soon became a must-have.

First comic I ever bought, at a second hand bookstore (thank you newspaper route money!). They had a long rack of old comics just stacked up, and this one caught my eye. Went back the next day and snagged the next twenty issues or so. If I'm remembering right, it was missing a few of the issues from the 250s, but I was able to track them down at a local comic shop.

In my opinion, "Everyone vs Galactus" is the perfect comic book. I'm sure this is partially colored by nostalgia, but that's OK!

FF#243 is a nice place to start! #242-244 is a remarkable three-issue arc.

I cannot possibly remember the first 45 comics I owned. A neighbor had several that I borrowed before I got my own. As I recall, my first DC was Superboy #147. My first Marvel was Marvel Tales Collector's Item Classics #19.

I was only going to do "first 10" but I got caught up in the memories and had to remind myself to stop at 45. There are probably some inaccuracies, but these are the ones I remember getting as they came out (or really shortly thereafter).

A bunch near the end was a pile I was given for Christmas. (I thought Daredevil #187 was part of the group but that had come out several months prior so maybe not?) That pile was from my mom for Christmas, but after that my Grandmother (who worked at a convenience store) would buy a bunch off the racks whenever I came over for a visit. A lot of my "first issues" of various titles came from her.
