Marvel seemed to have a lot of fun with some cover taglines for a majority of their titles during 1960s thru the '80s (when they seemed to drift away for some reason)... here's a chance to list some of your favorites.  My list could either fire my imagination as a kid, or give me a good chuckle today:

10.  BLAZING WESTERN ACTION AS YOU LIKE IT!

9.  TRAPPED IN A WORLD HE NEVER MADE!

8.  KUNG FU ACTION IN THE MIGHTY MARVEL MANNER!

7.  ALL YOU NEED IS A PENCIL

6.  INVINCIBLE GUARDIANS OF WORLD FREEDOM!

5.  FIRE & FURY IN THE AGE OF CONAN!

4.  THE WORLD'S GREATEST COMIC MAGAZINE!

3.  SKY-RIDER OF THE SPACEWAYS!

2.  THEY CAME FROM INNER SPACE

1.  WHOEVER KNOWS FEAR BURNS AT THE TOUCH OF...

Which ones always stood out for you?

I always liked "Welcome to the X-Men, Kitty Pryde. Hope you surive the experience!" and the various variations for different characters as they joined the X-Men.

Earth's Mightiest Heroes and The World's Greatest Comic Magazine were the two that stuck out for me in my comic-reading youth. The comparison between the two used to tickle me a little.

I also liked "THE RUMOURS ARE TRUE..." for the first appearance of the black Spider-Man costume, though this might be better described as merely cover blurb.

I was always a sucker for "BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT... (and enjoyed the parody version on Marvel's No-Prize Book #1 "BECAUSE NOBODY DEMANDED IT!"

Edited to correct the syntax in a sentence.

“Trapped in a world he never made”, never made sense to me.   Other than God, and a few god like characters, who makes worlds?

Googling around, people seem to think it's a reference to a poem by A. E. Housman, called the Laws of God, The Laws of Man. In that poem it is directly about coming into a world that already exists and the choice we all face of whether to obey the will of others or reject their edicts.

The laws of God, the laws of man,
He may keep that will and can;
Not I: let God and man decree
Laws for themselves and not for me;
And if my ways are not as theirs
Let them mind their own affairs.
Their deeds I judge and much condemn,
Yet when did I make laws for them?
Please yourselves, say I, and they
Need only look the other way.
But no, they will not; they must still
Wrest their neighbor to their will,
And make me dance as they desire
With jail and gallows and hell-fire.
And how am I to face the odds
Of man’s bedevilment and God’s?
I, a stranger and afraid
In a world I never made.
They will be master, right or wrong;
Though both are foolish, both are strong.
And since, my soul, we cannot fly
To Saturn nor to Mercury,
Keep we must, if keep we can,

WHO SAYS A COMIC BOOK HAS TO BE GOOD?

That was on a Marvel series once.

Mike B: Yes. It really was the World's Greatest Comic.

Ms. Jansen: The second line to that is "Not brand Echh!" I hope you got the recent TPB. Anyone who thinks Stan and Jack etc. were a little too serious should sleep with that book under their pillow.

A few others I recall...

THIS IS IT! THE BIG ONE!

<Character> NO MORE!

ENTER: <Character>!

AND ONLY ONE CAN SAVE THEM!

WHO SHALL SAVE US FROM... <Character>!

EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES!

"AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!"

"IT'S CLOBBERIN' TIME!"

CAN MARVEL'S NEWEST SUPERSTAR SURVIVE... <Villain name>?

EARTH'S FIRST MUTANT!

There have to be at least a dozen or two more, but these made an impression on me.

It's based on a line from a poem by A.E. Housman:
The laws of God, the laws of man,
He may keep that will and can;
Not I: let God and man decree

I, a stranger and afraid
In a world I never made.

They will be master, right or wrong;
Though both are foolish, both are strong.
And since, my soul, we cannot fly
To Saturn nor to Mercury,
Keep we must, if keep we can,
These foreign laws of God and man.
As you can see, in its original context it's more a commentary about individual choice vs expectations of society.  Stan was inspired to title the Hulk story in Tales to Astonish #95:  "A World He Never Made."  Since that was a story featuring the High Evolutionary, he obviously meant the words in a more literal way, since of course the High Evolutionary made Counter Earth.

When the story was reprinted in Marvel Super-Heroes #50, the "trapped in a" portion was added to the cover:

Then the following year someone got the idea to use the same phrase as Howard the Duck's tagline.  In that context, it seems to mean more something like a fish out of water, caught in a situation not of your own making.

I'm getting an education here, plus remembering how I need that issue of the reprint title (as well as #51)!
