DP7 really hit a good stride in the last year.

That's a great interview, BTW. I especially appreciate the part on Hank Pym (around the 3:50 mark, if anyone wants to check). Shooter's take has always been to throw Bob Hall under the bus for one botched panel, but the abuse is all over those issues. The interviewer sticks to his guns and quite rightly calls Shooter out on it, so kudos for that. Most interviewers would have backed down on the subject.

Shooter's view on the Dark Phoenix saga is bound the ruffle some feathers (4:12 onward) around these parts. He basically says that story was all Claremont.

The biggest stumbling block for the New Universe may have been the artwork.

No love for Tony Salmons?  And Giffen took over some book a few issues in, when he was heavily in his Muñoz period (which I dug, ethics aside).

I don't remember Tony Salmons drawing anything. I just recall the artwork on most NU comics, at least early on, looking pretty ordinary.

"Secret Wars having odd portrayals seems to be a popular opinion in this board, but I haven't seen any examples offered (besides one Spidey/X-Men fight). I never noticed anyone being more out of character than they would have been in an average guest spot."

All of a sudden Hawkeye hated mutants, or at least didn't trust them. This from a guy who'd worked with Wanda, Pietro, and Hank McCoy for years. Made no sense. Remember this panel?

Didn't this panel follow Cyclops or Professor X saying the X-Men would go with Magneto instead of the non-mutant heroes?

The New Universe launched with Mark Teixeira, Paul Ryan, Lee Weeks, Giffen, Gray Morrow, Tony Salmons, Ernie Colón, Trimpe, McFarlane, and, as you allow, JRJr all doing books within the first couple months. Those might not be the flashiest artists (with one or two exceptions), but there are some very good ones on the list.

If I were a Marvel editor, I would reject this fictional hero “Jim Shooter”
as envisioned by Jim Shooter in this interview, given the complete lack
of character flaws. That’s a 1960’s era DC hero.

I don't see that panel as an example of Hawkeye hating mutants. For one, it's clearly exposition meant for the reader. And as said, it follows a panel where the X-Men stand up for Magneto. He's calling them out for defending a murderer. If anything, having hung out with Pietro and Wanda would probably make him more triggered when someone sticks up for Magneto.

Wolverine seemed to regress about 40 issues worth of Claremont development, but I only see that as a good thing.

I agree some of the villains don't come off too well, but for Klaw and Ultron there are story reasons behind it, at least. In general, villains are a lot more vulnerable to off-model portrayals because they make so few appearances. Before Shooter, I don't remember Molecule Man having any personality except for "supervillain", and he's clearly presented as an insecure wimp before getting his powers in FF #20.

"You mutants stick together, huh?"

That's the voice of a bigot. That's not Clint's voice. He could've said "you outlaws stick together" or used yet some other word than "mutant."

Substitute "mutant" with "Blacks" or "Jews" or "gays" and it becomes clear.

More like he's accusing the X-Men of bigotry. "So you're defending a murderer just because he's a mutant like you?"

The word mutant is used there to let the reader know what the connection between Magneto and the X-Men is.

People are actually defending the mischaracterization of the characters in SECRET WARS by saying "it doesn't mean what you think it means." The mind boggles.

I will refrain from further comment on this. Carry on...
