To be fair to Hawkeye, Magneto was undeniably the supremacist and the X-Men were siding with the supremacist.

More like he's accusing the X-Men of bigotry. "So you're defending a murderer just because he's a mutant like you?"  The word mutant is used there to let the reader know what the connection between Magneto and the X-Men is.

That's exactly how I read it Harri.  Hawkeye still comes off as a hot head, but that's how he was portrayed at that point in time.  There are examples of characters who were out of character in Secret Wars, but this is not one of them.

I believe the word mutant is there to assist Shooter with his sledge-hammer. And as noted... Hawkeye was part of Cap's Kooky Quartet, which was half mutants anyhow.

"Well, sticking to a blood soaked maniac like him doesn't speak well of you, pal!" I see no prejudice here, any more than had the Fantastic Four sided off with Dr. Doom and Hawkeye were admonishing them.

So, it’s ok to say “all black people stick together” then?

Tiny brownie points to Secret Wars Hawkeye for not saying 'mutie'?

That's not what's happening here.  The comment wasn't made in a vacuum.  The X-men had basically said "We're mutants, so we're splitting off from the rest of you, and teaming up with Magneto (because even though he's a mass murderer, he's also a mutant)."  Hawkeye is responding to that.

Brian Miller - you HAD to play that card?

No, Brian Miller, it is not  okay to say “all black people stick together” and it is not okay to say "all mutant people stick together" and you're commenting on bad Jim Shooter writing and go away now.

****

What card? It’s a simple question. Just substitute black for mutant in
that panel that’s posted. And I don’t have to say it. Jim Shooter put the
words in Hawkeye’s mouth.

Why do I have to go away for commenting on bad Shooter writing? You
literally just said it’s not ok to say that. Yet you’re defending it. Maybe
you should be the one to go away.

You can't compare Magneto to a random member of minority group X, who just want to live their life. Magneto has both the power and desire to enslave humanity. He has literally tried to murder Hawkeye and his teammates. In that context it's not surprising Hawkeye gets worked up over the matter.

The X-Men, for their part, don't try to whitewash Magneto's actions. Their argument is they need his power and shouldn't waste resources on a guy who's not currently being a threat. Magneto driving a wedge between the mutants and other heroes is actually one of the more interesting and better-written parts of SW, IMO.

I just got thru the part where the divorce attorney that specializes in
domestic abuse rakes him over the coals over the Hank/Jan thing. He
blames the whole thing on Bob Hall and then says how he demands a
lot from artists and not all pencilers can deliver all the nuance he asks
for. Guys like George Perez, David Lampham and Don Perlin can but
most can’t.

*******

No one ever said Hawkeye shouldn’t question it. It’s the words Shooter
used to convey those feelings that come into question and how out of
character THOSE WORDS are for the character.
