I'm not.

Personally, I don't think there should be a Jefferson Davis Memorial. So I understand the sentiments of the people who stole the chair.  I view JD the same way they do.

But if its okay for them to do this, then its okay for anybody to steal, destroy, deface, etc., any monument or other form of speech we disagree with; especially if its unpopular.

The fact that they are demanding the owners of the chair publish their speech in exchange for the return of the property only makes it worse.
This is an attack on the First Amendment, plain and simple.

Should have just done a full stop after "stealing is wrong."

It's a hilarious and meaningful prank, civil disobedience in the tradition of Abbie Hoffman and the Yippies.

Private individuals were not victimized. United Daughters of the Confederacy is a repulsive organization (not to mention a registered charity, subsidized by tax dollars) and their ownership claim is dubious.

I'll lose not an hour of sleep if UDC ends up hanging a woke banner for a day as ransom to get their racist trophy back. I'll lose even less sleep if White Lies Matter shits all over the chair.

No.

Anything that'll piss off folks that still support the CSA is fine in my book.

The South lost. Slavery has been abolished.

Get the fuck over it and catch up to the 21st century.

"Private individuals were not victimized."

That's a slippery slope. Organizations are composed of private individuals.

"United Daughters of the Confederacy is a repulsive organization (not to mention a registered charity, subsidized by tax dollars) and their ownership claim is dubious."

I doubt you'd find a single poster on these boards who disagrees with you.  But again, if you abridge the rights of any group to express themselves (in this case by displaying a monument on their property) just because you disagree with them, or because their views are unpopular, you are validating the abridgment of anyone's right to free speech by anyone else who disagrees as passionately as you disagree with the Daughters of the Confederacy.

"The South lost. Slavery has been abolished."

Yes.

"Get the fuck over it and catch up to the 21st century."

No one is required to do this.  If there are still people out there who share the opinions of the CSA, they are entitled to express them.

If you disagree with them, hang your own banner.  If one of them tore it down, I would be just as opposed to that as I am to a person stealing their monument.

The stunt is dangerous. Not the stunt itself, which is just silly. It's dangerous because it invites retaliation and escalation. Statues today, people tomorrow.

Monuments stand as symbols and, thus, become targets for opposing philosophies.

This often results in broken laws, but it is a role played by controversial monuments, without exception, since the first one went up.

I don't know who is doing this. But I will not shed a tear if the toilet threat is carried out.

Trump supporters, some carrying Confederate flags, stormed the Capitol and literally smeared feces in the hallways. But I'm not convinced an opposing shit-for-tat strategy is the smartest choice.

Michael,

Equating vandalism with a violent insurrection?  You lost me before you started.

I made no equation, Marc. I'm only questioning whether people who oppose racists should be using similar excremental means. It just doesn't seem to me that either Martin Luther King Jr or Malcolm X or Jesse Jackson or John Lewis, etc., would advocate for this kind of stunt, which is fittingly provocative but doubtfully productive.
