Witnessing that might make one believe in a vengeful God.

Interesting reading. Yes, the 'gods' must have been angry...

There's a super-vitrified wall in the north of Scotland that could be explained by a similar event not recorded historically. Von Daniken types have of course explained it with aliens.

Only a matter of time before it happens again.  Question is: are we equipped to predict and do something about it?

No, we're not. As long as we are Earthbound, nothing can be done. We can't even manage a lifeboat solution. Hope for the best, which are really only two options, far enough away for minimum affect on yourself of so close you die instantly. Have a nice day. :)

In terms of doing something about it - no ; as far as prediction - there are 'eyes on the sky' already which are actively tracking Near Earth Objects. NASA's Asteroid Watch for example shows 5 approaches in just the last couple of days - 21st & 22nd September - the closest of which was approximately bus-sized and came within 300,000 miles of Earth. For context, that's not so far beyond the orbit of the Moon.

So, we might have some sort of preview of our impending doom - but not the ability to dodge it ( although now I'm imagining giant rockets a la 'When Worlds Collide' ... ! )

 QUOTE:
One remaining puzzle is why the city and over 100 other area settlements were abandoned for several centuries after this devastation.

Gee, I wonder. Is that really a puzzle?

The scary thought: It's going to happen again. We just don't know when and where.

Keeping in mind that seventy percent of the Earth's surface is water, and that of the land that remains only about 2% is urbanized, the likelihood of impacts such as this are very remote. Note how few there have been in human history.

Mind you, a direct hit is not strictly necessary, if the rock is big enough!
