ron: Elevate the discourse.

**

From what lofty heights do you descend to delicately spread your seeds of wisdom?

I am totally confused by your posts. To whom is this advice addressed? Who should be taking this critique of their current level of discourse to heart?

Ah, the cost of petrol.

Over a decade ago, I visited the US & stayed with a family. We got on
to the price of petrol & thus, the average mileage from a car & the size
of vehicle engines - comparing the UK & USA.

My guests struggled to believe that my car, which @ the time did 45-50
miles per gallon, was seen in the UK as being on the lower end of fuel
economy.

‘But you get crappy power as well’

No, I get 130 BHP which is actually plenty enough.

They could not believe I could get 130 BHP & 45 -50 miles per gallon
out of a 1.9 litre engine.

Now, I guess things might have changed, but @ the time I was visiting,
this was seen as practically impossible by my audience.
That really is thinking that can only come from thinking $5 a gallon is
expensive

But, for the sake of clarity & accuracy, it does not cost $20 a gallon in
the UK.
Our current cost is around £1.35 per litre.
4.54 litres in a gallon
So £6.13 per gallon

Current exchange rate is 1:1.38 so that equates to $8.46 per gallon.

Not $20 a gallon.
Petrol is expensive over here, but it’s not THAT expensive.

I have a 2019 5 Series BMW that costs me £88 to fill up or $121.60. On a full tank I can get 750 miles out of it, and a return of 68.3 mpg.

Oops, sorry, no idea how I got to that $20 figure. I knew we paid more but that was a genuine error. Lucky I don't work in finance eh?!

To be honest, it's the sort of figure I've
seen bandied around for a long time.
We have always exaggerated the price
differential between what we pay and what
others pay.
I remember not recognising the prices quoted
for Europe during the petrol strike.

So no worries, the perception that is fed to
the general public Vs the actual cost will
always be way off.

My apologies that I wasn't clear: I wasn't addressing anyone in particular or the forum audience specifically. I meant to communicate that when these issues are discussed in the common forum media, there is often a low level of engagement where conflict is valued over communication.
