I confess to wondering, given your tenure on other books, how long you would have stayed on the X-Men under the best of circumstances, before you might have temporarily 'ran out of any more stories to tell'.
Also Claremont aside, there was no stopping the juggernaut of the influx of multiple X-titles and (less committed) voices jumping into the fray, and the likelihood of being simpatico with all of them is nil.
Alpha Flight intersected with the X-Men from time to time, due to Wolverine, so I like that we're getting some guest appearances from the team. I'm happy with what we have.
As for post-JB AF, it was an exercise in "how can I show I didn't read the book" along with "I'll treat them as just another team, how hard can that be?" All-around disappointing. I'm moderately surprised the title lasted as long as it did with such mediocre workmanship after JB departed for HULK.
If a miracle were to happen, a genie granted a dying fan's wish, or some alignment of the stars that happens every billions years--all at once--were to occur and JB was back on ALPHA FLIGHT...
I imagine it would take him all of three pages to reestablish a workable status quo and then move forward, never to revisit 'the dark days' ever again.
And not a single character would have to die, either.
