What's your favorite piece of art by John Byrne that wasn't in a comic book, or lifted from a comic book (though the piece can feature characters from the comics)? For example, an original portfolio piece, an illustration for another product, like action figure packaging, or the cover to a game manual, etc. Promo art for a comic book series, such as a poster or leaflet can count, as long as it's not just a picture lifted for the advertisement from the book, itself, but an original piece created specifically for the ad.

I thought the "Alpha Flight" action figure packaging was pretty cool!

Yeah, those were good.  I also very much liked the trading cards that were included.  The figures themselves were so-so with Sasquatch and Snowbird being my favorites.  The Puck figure was way off.  And I wish they would have included a figure of Guardian, but you can't have it all.

I was surprised, though, that they even included JB in that.  That's the first time I remember the creator of a character (for Marvel at least) actually having something to do with a licensed product.

Any story behind how that came to be, JB?

First place would be the Fantastic Four Poster.  Second place would go to the Alpha Flight poster.

They called and asked, I said "Yes."

That's about all there was to it.

Mine would be the Babe splash which John mentions drawing before the
series was even created. (Which started me on my commission theme "A
dark and Stormy Night")

Wow, nice usage of shading (duotone?).

Gotta be the shoe box!

(Just kidding -- I know JB did some art for a shoe box once, but I don't
think I have ever seen it.)

If the Bullpen Bulletins page with JB surrounded by the Marvel characters
does not count, then I'll go with the FF poster.

My "favorite" is an oldie, a "sentimental favorite" from The Art of John Byrne.  It's that sketch of Wolverine stalking toward the "camera" with his claws covered in blood and his costume torn to shreds.  It suggests all the Wolverine adventures they would "never print" (at the time).

It has a cool detail that shouldn't be there, but really works -- one whole shoulder of the costume is gone except for a shred of the sleeve which still dangles from his arm pit to his glove... except the costume doesn't have sleeves!  But it works and wouldn't be as good a sketch without it.

Edited to add (in Chandler's voice): Could I "use" any more quotation marks?

I've gotta agree with you on the Wolverine shot from the Art of John Byrne book, Mark.  The definitive Wolverine...

Look at how effective that "angry face" is.  A lot of posers put furrowed brows and teethy grimaces on their tough guy drawings, but I don't think I've ever seen a drawing that had as much menace as this one.  Really great sketch!

These are cool.  I think they're from Wizard, but I'm not sure what they were for. Trading cards?

There's a Barney Rubble in there for you hawkeyes.

Yes I love that along with this wolverine. Do you still have these two images JB or are they long gone??? The FF poster along with a million other things is awesome too.

The jogging She-Hulk poster springs to mind.  How can you go wrong with her done by JB?  I'm sure I'll agree with everyone's favorite, so it's hard to pin down my own.

The Superman "Time" cover is my favorite, followed closely by the Scholastic Batman books.

Those would be my second and third favorites.

There's a picture that JB did of the FF,X-Men and Avengers that I believe is in the Art of John Byrne book from back in the day that is my favorite though.

I like the sketch JB did of Petra Verkaik as a super-hero:

I liked it so much that I bought it!
