Did one have to get permission to provide the character heads/images in the upper left hand corner? Who made the decision of what is provided there, the editor? Was there extra compensation to those who provided it?

True, the "All-New Imperial Guard" rings false, as well. I don't think that anyone on the creative side was trying to present this IG as anything other than the same team as in #107, just with some new members added.

Todd Klein weighs in, and so does Tom Orzechowski! Both of them agree that it's Gaspar Saladino's lettering, and Todd has some interesting insights. Click HERE to read all about it on Todd Klein's blog (which you'll probably want to bookmark, since he talks about lettering, logos, and comics history all the time).

Todd Klein's opinion makes this more contestable for me.

I have to agree it's authentic if he thinks it is because he's looking purely at the lettering side of it and coming away convinced.

I was convinced it was a fake, and if it turns out that I was right then I will have to admire the imagination on display by the forger.

I have seen "production art" from highly prized comics go for a lot of $$. So, an intrepid dishonest person could conceivably generate significant money from nothing by inventing "discarded production art" from X-Men 137.

I'm actually glad if this is the "genuine" reproduction.

Thing is, if someone is buying this as a collectible, it’s only a couple of steps beyond a xerox.

The buyer of the piece mentioned that there were only a few original elements, so I'll guess that would be the lettering on an overlay, and any hand-drawn elements needed to widen the composition so that it would fit that cover design. I don't have a ballpark guess on what he'd have paid for it, but it's such a milestone in comics history that I'd bet it was on the high end for production art.

Any decent mechanical cover from before 1987 (all stats) sells for $500

This one? On the up and up? Thousands. Easy.

If it's real, it's kinda neat to see the editorial thought process. It was clearly a special cover for a special issue. They made the right choice in the end to show more art!

I wonder what color the blank framing area would've been? Yellow? Red? Purple? It definitely does recall many '70s 100Page DC covers.

In a way the irregularities could make it seem less a forgery as who would sign Austin that way, or put creator names on the cover in a way rarely if ever done at that time, if they were trying to craft something of the period.

Can anyone point to an auction or other HD scan of the original art?

The buyer indicated that he'd made a deal with the owner of the piece, so it didn't go through an online auction site, and probably wasn't posted anywhere. Someone knew that someone else had it, questions were asked, offers were made.
