More of a doodle than a sketch...

*****

One of the odder things I have seen happen in the 30 years I have been going to conventions, is seeing the "convention sketch" evolve (or, depending on your "viewpoint" devolve) from a quick "doodle" intended, like an autograph, to commemorate a moment, into elaborate drawings that sometimes don't even get finished while the lucky recipient is watching.

This is one of the reasons I developed my "19 Second Batman" sketch -- to get back to the original "feel" of convention sketches, but to label the drawing in such a way that the recipient (and anyone else who sees it) understands that this is not meant to be the detailed, elaborate drawing that has in the eyes of many replaced the "sketch".

In this way, I can do "sketches" for a couple of dozen people, while they watch, instead of maybe three who have to wander off and come back from time to time to see if it's "finished yet".

I've never seen the 19-second Batman. Could you post one?

Most of the sketches I posted were done during formal autograph sessions. The Bill Sienkiewicz piece cost me £5 iirc, but all the others were free. In those days I'd met Garry Leach a few times and knew him well enough to chat to. He did that sketch while we were standing in the middle of the dealers' room at a con!

I watched Michael W Kaluta work on a "sketch" of Gambit for some comic bigwig's daughter. I came back an hour later & he was still "sketching!"
