I should probably post this over on his boards, but I thought I'd share with the JBF cuz its kinda funny.

This comic is cover dated January 1983.  Roger Stern was signing stuff at a local comic shop, Star Realm, in Omaha, Nebraska (must have been Spring 1984).  Anyway, I didn't know he was going to be there and was unprepared.  I bought this issue at the suggestion of the comic shop owner  It was Roger's first issue on Avengers.  I asked if I could get his autograph and he said "yes" and grabbed the comic.  Of course at that time marking my comic was out of the question.  Hey, I was 13.  I'll never forget the look he gave me.  "You've got to be kidding me, kid" was clearly written on his face.  So anyway, he grabbed a hunk of purple paper and signed it...and here it is, unseen by me for the last 20 years.

Since there was nobody else in the store, I sorta circled around for a while, wanting to ask a million questions, and perhaps suggest a few excellent story ideas I had churning around in my 13 year old brain.  I thought I'd really get his attention if I went for the big one right away, so I dropped, "what if Galactus met the Shaper of Worlds?"  Well, he responed to my cosmos-shaking query with "yeah."  All my great ideas were dashed on the rocks of rejection, and I've never truly recovered.  :(

Thanks a lot, Roger.  :)

Well, I think its funny, anyway.

The name helps the intimidation factor.

"Roger Stern".  It's a bit like "Peter Gruff" or "Jim Hardass"

Sung to "I'm afraid of Britney Spears":

"I'm afraid of Roger Stern and Joe Straczynski,
Chris Claremont and Stan Lee, I don't know what to feel..."

There's no reason to be afraid of Rog -- unless you
piss him off. Then ---- well, inside each of us there
ofttimes dwells a mighty and raging fury!

Hey, I've never thought of his name that way...Roger STERN.  No wonder I've had an underwhelming fear of him.  :)

Roger Stern did a signing in Omaha when I was 13?

That's what I get for spending all my time at Dragon's Lair...

On the topic of Roger Stern -- I picked up his latest novel, Superman : The Never-Ending Battle (Justice League of America), and it's excellent!

If you're a fan of JLA, I highly recommend you pick it up.

I will agree, Roger Stern CAN be intimidating. Seriously, I have met the guy several times now and I have yet to figure out how to really talk to the guy about comics... because he is so damn quiet. I think he recognizes me year in and year out but its like, umm, hi. Thanks for the stories. See ya Next Year. ANd off I go.

Hoping you're still looking...
Thanks for all the great stories over the years, Mr. Stern.

Haven't read any Superman titles at all since your "Swan Song" in issue 700 (that's all changed with Action #827, of course)

Anyway, thanks for the excellent stories and spot-on characterizations.

As soon as I get out of the fetal position on the floor I will respond to that picture.  :)

Edited twice to correct "picture" twice.

Wait, wait, wait, let me get this straight, you're name is Jim O'Neill.

So now we have a Jim O'Neill and a Tim O'Neill.

Weird.

My cousin Slim O'Neill is planning on posting in the near future,
so it might get even more confusing.

Seeing that Avengers cover for the first time in years reminds me of
how nicely Rog set up the redemption of Hank Pym (who had become
a wife-beater under Shooter's pen, if memory serves) with #227
(which featured a fantastic recap of Pym's life) and the trial and
showdown with Egghead and the Masters of Evil that followed.
Excellent work. (I really liked the art combination of Sal Buscema and
Brett Breeding, too.)

Not to forget Monica! #227's connection with Amazing Spider-Man
Annual #16 (the new CM's debut) is exactly how the Marvel Universe
should be used by writers, and is the opposite of what could be
called 'Secret Wars syndrome.' I loved the scene in which Monica
learned about Mar-Vell in the Avengers Mansion computer archives.

I was 10 and 1983 was truly my own "golden age of comics" (as JB
would say). Thanks for the nostagia trip, Bill!

Quiet indeed. When I met him at MOC I thought he was pissed off at me for something. Sorry for misunderstanding, Roger.
