I'm really not trying to stir sh!t here - there's been 4 issues out now with Nelson as inker (3.5 technically....), and I'm genuinely curious about where folks here stand on this. I figured a poll would be the best way to gauge this.

Sounds like Action needs a new editor.

Well, that will be taken care of soon at least....
But after seeing #830, now I'm not so sure the art changes are only due to editorial. Larry Strucker's inked pages, while maybe a bit too light for me in some cases, did not seem to be changing anything that JB drew.

I hope that won't be set in stone. I know you were told that they are looking for 12-issue creative team arcs now, but if sales of Action Comics remain at sellout levels, perhaps there's a glimmer of hope that they will reconsider?

If not, it's a shame. I haven't seen any bad stories about incoming editor Matt Idelson, who you worked with briefly on Hulk I believe.

John are you and Gail staying of Action Comics for awhile, or can't ya say? I really hope it's not a short run.

If we could just see an issue of Nelsons style without the re-
drawing, I think I'd like it, but the re-drawing just ruins it for me.
The #1 reason I'm buying the book is because John Byrne is
drawing it, so....

(Gail Simone's writing is coming in at a very close 2nd, mind
you).

The inking changes aren't really due to editorial. Nelson has a more heavy handed style, not as much as Kevin Nowlan, but he does more re-drawing when he inks. Look at other jobs Nelson has inked and you'll see the same thing. It's not just how he's inking JB.

I think JB is so big... That to force upon him just one inker for a full
run in a series is like trying to catch a huracane with bare hands. My
dream book would be the one with diferent a inker every issue!!

*************

Gail said they were. You may be correct in describing his inking style, but it has been told that this was brought about by editorial.

Yes, Action needs a new inker.

Although I remembered being slammed by others on this board for
suggesting this after Byrne's first Simone issue.

Now they seem to be with me...

I probably would have been one of those people. But now I feel kinda stupid for defending him after the first issue.

Brian: Gail only mentioned one change she knew about coming from editorial, which was the panel of Rapture's Joker-like face. Not that I agree with it, since I'm sure that Gail asked for that maniacal grin in the first place, but I suppose I can understand a request to change it.

It's not proof that every instance of re-drawing was an editorial request, though.

I honestly do like Nelson's line style in and of itself, and I'd love to see what
he can do as a penciller. However, I also think it's poorly matched with JB's
art even if you leave out the question of any redraws.

I know this is going to sound clichéd, but the best inker for JB is, was, and
shall be Terry Austin.

It was "announced" (very slyly I must say) at the Chicago Con that, along with the editorial shifts, there'll be creative team shifts as well.  Though I was really hoping it wouldn't affect all titles, especially the current teams on the Superman books.

There's always an escape clause with these things, Kevin. For instance, why
not replace Gail and JB on Action with someone else...and have the "new"
creative team of Superman or Adventures of Superman be Gail and JB?

I actually like the textural "feel" of Nelson's inks, tho' there is an odd quality as well but it seems like something that's smoothing out over the first several issues -- given time and a little direction - i think he actually is a good fit.

If John and Gail leave together, i also do hope they leave to work on another project together -- i'm really enjoying the book so far and i've never been a Superman fan, other than John previous work with him.

Keith:  And yet...

Well, I'm not - It's not like I phrased the question as "Should Nelson be fired?" I was tempted to make this a no-reply poll and leave it at that, but I figured some discussion of the topic is warranted.

It's a very delicate thing to discuss something like this. Perhaps a poll is not the most tactful way of doing it?

This is not though just a case of just not liking an inkers style and being bitchy about it. Nelson is redrawing the pencils of one of the most sucessful artists in the business who has a 20 year association with the character.

Now either Nelson is taking it upon himself to do this or he is being asked to do it. Either way it really is not good enough.

We pay for the book expecting to get art pencilled by Byrne and that is what we should get.
