Colon drew some of the most beautiful women ever, in my opinion. His Rachel Van Helsing, Janet Van Dyne, Clea, and weirdly and I'm not ashamed to say the robot Jocasta from AVENGERS. I'm telling you, I thought she was hot. What happened to her?
Colon's a master of illustrating psychological states through physical motion. Even the structure of the anatomy reflects the desperation of a character. Unlike today's artist who doesn't have a grasp of proper anatomy, Colon twisted bodies to reflect the strain on the bodies and the minds of the protagonists. He was so better suited to "night" characters because he could take more liberties. I think his work on NIGHT FORCE, particularly the issues 8-10 about the "Beast" up against the scumbag robber who is the Baron's unwitting "agent" (a brilliant story by the way, realistic, cynical, brutal, and the final act of redemption of a terrible man, wonderous Wolfman) was my first true appreciation of Colon, in conjunction with his BATMAN/DETECTIVE COMICS which truly made me a fan. And then the discovery of TOMB OF DRACULA, which of course is one of the truly great comics ever published.
But I think he performed just as well on at least one science-based hero, in Iron Man, and his Sub-Mariner screaming "Imperious Rex!" is as powerful a superhero image as anything produced by Buscema or Kirby, in my view.
