Hi Dale,

I am a huge fan of Gene Colan ( as  are many others here I'll bet ). I cannot recommend enough his work on Dr Strange or Daredevil! I highly recommend seeking out any of those issues...you will not be dissapointed at all.

I have not picked up Secrets and Shadows yet but it is on my must buy list.

I always felt he did the best Clea...can't really put my finger on it but she always had a otherworldly nature that was central to the character ( when done right). In others hands she always seemed like just another heros girl friend.

yeah, that interview with JB and Groth was interesting.

==========================================================

What exactly about it did you find interesting ?

I saw similarities in the criticizm of Colan then, to what is been levelled now at JB.

Colon drew some of the most beautiful women ever, in my opinion. His Rachel Van Helsing, Janet Van Dyne, Clea, and weirdly and I'm not ashamed to say the robot Jocasta from AVENGERS. I'm telling you, I thought she was hot. What happened to her?

Colon's a master of illustrating psychological states through physical motion. Even the structure of the anatomy reflects the desperation of a character. Unlike today's artist who doesn't have a grasp of proper anatomy, Colon twisted bodies to reflect the strain on the bodies and the minds of the protagonists. He was so better suited to "night" characters because he could take more liberties. I think his work on NIGHT FORCE, particularly the issues 8-10 about the "Beast" up against the scumbag robber who is the Baron's unwitting "agent" (a brilliant story by the way, realistic, cynical, brutal, and the final act of redemption of a terrible man, wonderous Wolfman) was my first true appreciation of Colon, in conjunction with his BATMAN/DETECTIVE COMICS which truly made me a fan. And then the discovery of TOMB OF DRACULA, which of course is one of the truly great comics ever published.

But I think he performed just as well on at least one science-based hero, in Iron Man, and his Sub-Mariner screaming "Imperious Rex!" is as powerful a superhero image as anything produced by Buscema or Kirby, in my view.

Man, I loved the Batman art when we had Colan on Detective, Newton on
Batman, and Aparo on Brave & The Bold/Batman and the Outsiders.

I just ordered this book. Tom Palmer is interviewed and discusses how he inked Colan's work.

'Infamous comments on Gene's pencils'?  Is it ok to ask about these or is it best left?

I'm not a Gene Colan fan but I think JB did a good job of inking that
Daredevil/Dr. Doom piece. I just wish I could see the whole picture.

Gene Colan is one very best authors of super hero comic books.
Algonside Jack, John Buscema, Gil Kane, Ditko, Romita, and all, one of the
essentials in the 50/80's.

Both my favorite reads by Colan have not been named already : his run on
CAPTAIN AMERICA (Gosh, Cap America moaning about a Sharon in bra
stuck in my head) and the two limited series of NATHANIEL DUSK,a
detective a la Hammet. written by an inspired Don Mc Gregor, Direct
color, no inking, I think Gene is very proud of this work.

Gene is still alive. He's fantastic. I sincerely had to say that I would have
love him doing a non stuff SH for a longer time. Well in fact Nathaniel
Dusk & NIGHT FORCE (DC) were totally super hero free and that are some
of Colan's best work.

And does anybody remember BLOODSCENT a one shot by Comico in the
late 80's, an horror story totally thrilling ?

Expect Cap, non of all these have ever been reprinted - then you can find
them for price cover in any online shops, so there are no reason to not
add right now to your collection ?

Other great Colan's work that we all should know ? What was his style
before Marvel ?
