I knew what you meant when you referred to it, as it is the technique I use to pencil. As I was working on my current doodle sketch here at work, trying to reinforce the pencils so that I don't have to ink it when I scan it, I had a few questions that I hope you don't mind answering:
  1. Have you ever inked a Thousand Line Penciller?
  2. How would you suggest an inker approach a Thousand Line Penciller?
  3. Are there any tricks to being able to draw with a less sketchy line?
  4. Could how tightly I grip my pencil (very) have anything to do with having the short, sketchy strokes?

1. Yes. George Tuska. Beautiful, beautiful pencils. Almost painting with his lead -- but a bear to ink!

2. Carefully! I talked to George Perez about this once, and he said his approach would have been to use a very fine pen or brush and ink every line. My approach was more in the direction of thinking of the thousand lines as if they were one, and looking at the contours and variations, and trying to mimic those.

3. Control! In my yoot, I too was a "thousand line" man, but I conditioned myself to make sure most of those lines overlapped, and became one line.

4. Very likely! I used to grip my pencil so hard that the callous on my finger was the size of a pea! I have relaxed a lot over the years, as I have learned to put fewer lines into each line. Now I try to hold my pencil as lightly as possible (while still maintaining control) and sweep the lines across the panel, drawing as much with my wrist as with my fingers.

Thank you for the answers. The very thing I was trying as an aid to decrease my sketchiness (tightening) could be causing it. Wow. I'm going to try it out.

Would it be better if some of the artists who skillfully pull of the thousand-line thing (Tuska, yourself from time to time, etc.) simply had their books shot straight from pencils instead of going to an inker?

This is very interesting. I've thought of "thousand line" artists as guys who sculpt with lead as much as draw. Not sure if that's an accurate perception...

Had a number of teachers at Kubert hammer the trait out of me. "Be
confident of the line you're putting down, don't be timid and put down a
number of lines," was the mantra I learned.

While I became that way eventually, I never did acquire the degree of
physical control over the pencil, pen, or brush that I had mentally. I like a
really smooth, clean line and my inking is just sloppy.

Moot point, though -- haven't really done any pen-and-ink illustration work
since I discovered Photoshop.
