are the faces supposed to be pink or white?

Pale Caucasian flesh color -- so no indication of
what's underneath. Tho I used to assume, given the
time and place they took as their model, that the
Inner Circle were probably a bunch of racists on top
of their other flaws.

Good job John!
Someone has this theme on the CAF (Comic Art Fan) gallery called "one second later" i.e. taking an original cover and drawing what would happen moments later. I think that would be an interesting project on some of your old covers.

I can imagine the "one second later" for covers featuring 2 heroes hurlting towards each other being them bonking each other's foreheads like coconuts.....

Interesting! I hadn't really thought of it that way but it would be consistent with their worldview. And, of course, the way Mastermind's illusion "cast" Storm (IIRC) was hardly a model of political correctness...

In the sketchbook thread I've revealed the effects the Hellfire Club had on
my feeble 12-year-old mind. I did endless doodles of the X-men fighting
these goons...

I can totally see the Inner Circle as racists. Though I do recall one of the "civilian" guardsmen beating on Wolverine being black, not that it negates the notion of course. Those guys probably weren't even aware that the Inner Circle existed.

Good luck on your eBaying JB! People pay top dollar for your stuff on there, so this is a pretty darn good idea.

Great piece. I like John's apparent ease of going back to his style of that time. The biggest difference I can make out is that the players cast no shadows onthe boxes around them.
About the Helfire Club and their being racists, it's true one could easily make this assumption during the Byrne days, Chris didn't portray them as such, later on. Saw had no problem with Emma being in Ororo's body, Sunspot's father was part of the inner circle and even Sunspot himself became a member (I don't recall if Chris did this, but he used it in his recent stories).
In any case, the only one obviously racist was Pierce, which made it hard for me to accept his working with mutants and even following the orders of one.
