Well say what you might, I cannot stand an overpowered Superman. I guess thats why Man of Steel was so ground-breaking for me, it made Superman more interesting. When a guy can single-handedly push a moon around or palm a black hole (not sure what was even meant by that) it just makes it uninteresting. I always thought it was the combination of all his powers that made Superman as tough as he was, not just one aspect such as strength. So, despite all the evidence to the contrary that is how I will always see him.

And, I also think that the reason Doc Samson wouldn't have a hope in hell of knocking him out with the same kind of sucker punch is also due to the above. Superman moves a lot faster than the Hulk, plus the same ruse would not work on him as he is also much smarter.

As far as the references of Marvel feats of strength that I pointed out earlier being from a long time ago, are not the examples of Superman juggling planets also a little dated? I don't recall him doing anything like that recently; however as I don't collect any of his titles I don't know for sure. Also, there is no way that he should be able to resist everything that Hal Jordan can put out with ease. Thats just sloppy writing in my opinion.

Never saw that one.  I recall Surfer mentioning Gladiator's weakness, though -- but I could be incorrectly remembering this.  I know for certain that Hulk exploited this weakness.

Thanks for the scan.  Cool power on Storm's part -- she ever do that again, or was it a one-off thing?

> Right, Frank... but even allowing for a bit of hyperbole, I think a strong-willed ring wielder should give Superman some trouble in a tussle.

> Unfortunately, as you've pointed out, that's just not the case.

It's been the case on two occasions that I know of: One, wherein John Stewart took out Superman in a single shot to Superman's eyes.  Two, wherein Tom Kalmaku incapcitated Superman by bringing Superman's greatest fears to life inside Superman's head.  This was with a ring powerful enough to freeze time and strip Parallax of his power, of course. But still.

I didn't mention any pre-Crisis feats.  They were all feats from the last 8 years or so.  Superman destroyed Earth Two by punching, and getting punched by, the Earth Two Superman during Infinite Crisis (their fight was also tearing apart space and time, if I remember correctly).  He also waxed a planet while fighting Zod during For Tomorrow (Zod and he tore it apart -- every hit on Zod's and Superman's bodies was, to some extent, transfered directly to the planet or somesuch).  The black hole event comes from JLA about 3 years back.  Holding up the Moon comes from a JLA special from the late 1990s.  He also split a "small Saturnian moon" in the Luthor 2000 special and was ten or so minutes from knocking the Moon from orbit simply by pounding on it -- according to Martian Manhunter -- while under the influence of kryptonite (he was sick, coughing and weezing).  This occured around that time, as well.

Etc.

Seem, one can complain about Superman being "overpowered" all they want...

but first, bitching about Superman being too powerful is the flip side of bitching that JB ruined the character by making him too weak.

In my mind, Superman's power is incalculable.  Regardless of how strong or not the character is his strength and power is incaluable literally.

So essentially the biggest thing was that I wanted to see Superman be dignified.

In the Donner movie the 'wow' moments came pretty much effortlessly to Superman.  In the Dini/Timm series there was some pretty cool stuff but there were a lot of moments that seemed to me to render Superman as rather undignfied.  Like when he caught a crane and strained.

For crying out loud!  What the heck muscles does he strain by flying and wedging himself under the thing?

Well, that wasn't the dumbest moment by a long shot, but it was just an example as to how the creators approached the 'wow' moments.

I don't want to see Superman move a planet because I can't see anybody his size put that much pressure on the planet without the crust collapsing.

Where was I?

Right.

I want Superman to be assumed to be so damn awesome.  That's the unit of measurement.  Anything that would give Superman pause or knock him on his ass is therefore also so damn awesome.  The problem with many writers after 1986 is that they didn't understand the principle so a lot of Superman's foes were giving him pretty good hits.

Yes, for the sake of continuity and canon the Pre-Crisis Superman could shatter the planet by head-butting it.

For the sake of the individual stories Superman was so damn awesome.  So when Mongul whomped him, then it was pretty clear that Mongul was beyond so damn awesome.

For the record, the antagonists in Forever People #1 under Kirby all qualify as holy crap in this system of measurement.  Sigma guns and Gravi-Guards.  Superman is pinned and needs help.

Superman being really strong wasn't a problem.

However, a continuity that has that kinda power in the past presents a problem if one wants to write a Superman of a different era.

For the record though, and this is just a difference of taste between me and JB....  I think getting knocked down is a bit far-fetched when you have beyond-pro-athlete reaction-coordination ability and the ability to.... negate gravity.

 QUOTE:
What can I say?  He's got an amazing track record against those things.  More often than not, he can outpower them toute de suite.  He beat out John Stewart's power during Sacrifice in the space of a panel or so, treated Guy Gardner's yellow ring like it was nothing when they fought in the early 1990s (did so to Gardner's green ring in Armegeddon 2001 -- who knows if that's cannon?).  Heck, did you see Superman fight a pmped-up, unleashed Kyle Raynor in Last Laugh?  Wow.

"Most powerful weapon in the universe" is just a tagline -- like Hulk's "unlimited strength," Juggernaut's "unstoppability" and Odin's "omnipotence."

Armageddon 2001 future stories were all canonical, because each glimpse of possible future timelines allowed Superman to avert stuff that was going to happen in his own life.  The possible future timelines all included situations that were well within the DCU's physics and capabilities.

That said, Kyle Rayner did wield the most powerful weapon in the universe and it is not just a tagline.  The fact is that it is the most powerful weapon in the universe.... and Kyle Rayner is not the most effective wielder of it.

If one is really an effective wielder of a Green Lantern power ring, they replace the oxygen inside Superman's lungs with green Kryptonite dust.

It's a wishing ring, for crying out loud.

The last time someone tried to do that, it didn't end well for the dude.  Cosmic King attempted to turn Superman's blood to Kryptonite in Superman/Batman.  Superman resisted it long enough to beat King off of him and then recovered instantly.

Superman has an amazing record against transmutation -- Disciple (worked the first time, but not the second -- and that was after a pump up), Skyhook, Sodom and Gamora, Gaea, the Scary Monsters demons, Viroxx's henchmen, the elder god from Seven Caskets, Midas, Cythonna, etc. -- he's resisted them all, with varying degrees of effort.

In fact, aside from the first Disciple attack, I can't think of a time that transmutation has ever worked on Superman.  He always resists it, from what I recall, by whatever means.  So I don't think that a GL turning his blood to Kryptonite is a sure thing at all.

I'm sorry, but a Green Lantern being able to turn Supermans blood to krytonite rings as a bloody stupid idea to me. Besides, since when can the power rings do stuff like that? I was always under the impression that they could emit massive amounts of energy and force, as well as create constructs using that same thing, not actually transmute matter.

I'd suggest seeking out FANTASTIC FOUR #250.

Cool, I'll try to hunt it down.  Until then, do you have a descript or a scan?

Thanks.

HEY! HEY! HEEEYYY!!! That's an avatar of me!!

I'm not sure why Roger chose to use me (I have no association with Roger other than reading his posts here), but am I that bad?

For the record, Roger took his avatar from my "Punch In The Chops" segment of "The Happy Show!," my public access TV program. I uploaded that segment to YouTube, where, apparently, Roger saw it.

It's a nifty avatar, I think. Roger, I'm just curious: Did you use it because you liked the segment, or just to be silly?

That's you? That's pretty cool, you have a TV show? I just got a link in an email, and did the avatar on a whim!
